Distinguished Composer in Residence at NYU
Spring 1,999 - Spring 2,000 Morton Subotnick is one of the United States' premier composers of electronic music and an innovator in works involving instruments and other media, including interactive computer music systems. Most of his music calls for a computer part, or live electronic processing; his oeuvre utilizes many of the important technological breakthroughs in the history of the genre. The work which brought Subotnick celebrity was "Silver Apples of the Moon" Written in 1967 using the Buchla modular synthesizer (an electronic instrument built by Donald Buchla utilizing suggestions from Subotnick and Ramon Sender), this work contains synthesized tone colors striking for its day, and a control over pitch that many other contemporary electronic composers had relinquished. There is a rich counterpoint of gestures, in marked contrast to the simple surfaces of much contemporary electronic music. There are sections marked by very clear pulses, another unusual trait for its time; "Silver Apples of the Moon" was commissioned by Nonesuch Records, marking the first time an original large-scale composition had been created specifically for the disc medium a conscious acknowledgement that the home stereo system constituted a present-day form of chamber music. Subotnick wrote this piece (and subsequent record company commissions) in two parts to correspond to the two sides of an LP. The exciting, exotic timbres and the dance-inspiring rhythms caught the ear of the public the record was an American bestseller in the classical music category, an extremely unusual occurrence for any contemporary concert music at the time.

Most of his music calls for a computer part, or live electronic processing; his oeuvre utilizes many of the important technological breakthroughs in the history of the genre. The next eight years saw the production of several more important compositions for LP, realized on the Buchla synthesizer: "The Wild Bull", "Touch", "Sidewinder" and "Four Butterflies". All of these pieces are marked by sophisticated timbres, contrapuntally rich textures, and sections of continuous pulse suggesting dance. In fact, "Silver Apples of the Moon" was used as dance music by several companies throughout the world. In 1975, fulfilling another record company commission (this time, Odyssey), Subotnick composed "Until Spring", a work for solo synthesizer. In this work, changes in settings which Subotnick made in real time on the synthesizer were stored as control voltages on a separate tape, enabling him to duplicate any of his performance controls, and to subsequently modify them if he felt the desire to do so. While the use of control voltages was nothing new, it suggested to Subotnick a means to gain exact control over real-time electronic processing equipment. The next step in Subotnick's use of control voltages was the development of the "ghost" box. This is a fairly simple electronic device, consisting of a pitch and envelope follower for a live signal, and the following voltage controlled units: an amplifier, a frequency shifter, and a ring modulator. The control voltages for the ghost box were originally stored on a tape, updated now to E-PROM. A performer, whose miced signal is sent into the ghost box, can then be processed by playing back the pre-recorded tape of E-PROM, containing the control voltages. As neither the tape nor E-PROM produce sound, Subotnick refers to their sound modification as a "ghost score". By providing the performer with exact timings, coordination between performer and the ghost score is controlled.

composer " I like to think that when you are creating music you become three different people." How were you motivated to become a composer? As for why I started.... when I was 6 or 7 I had some sort of bronchial problem. The doctor informed my parents that a wind instrument might help my breathing. I wanted to play the trombone, but didn't know what it was called. I asked for the 'clarinet' thinking that it was the trombone, and then was too proud to tell them that I made a mistake! I became quite good at the clarinet and was fortunate to play most of the fine musical literature for the instrument by the time I was in my teens. The music I played inspired me to write my own music. I then began to study music and write music, and finally decided that composing music was one of the most important things in my life. Morton Subotnick (Mel Powell Chair in Composition) is one of the acknowledged pioneers in the field of electronic music and an innovator in works involving instruments and other media. He was the first composer to be commissioned to write an electronic composition expressly for the phonograph medium, Silver Apples of the Moon (Nonesuch, 1967). This now classic work and The Wild Bull (also an electronic commission for Nonesuch, 1968) have been choreographed by leading dance companies throughout the world and remain in permanent repertory. In addition to composing numerous works in the electronic medium, Subotnick has written eight works for orchestra (including a Bicentennial commission played by the six major U.S. orchestras), chamber and ensemble works (including The Fluttering of Wings premiered by the Juilliard String Quartet) and music for the theatre and multi-media events.

Morton Subotnick was always interested in the relationship between technology and performance, and he was somewhat influential in inventing new ways performers can interact with music. His electronic music works in the 60's and 70's had historic significance, but did not seem to influence many musicians the way Stockhausen's or Varese's music did. Subotnick was a pioneer in developing new interfaces between electronic music and performers. Morton Subotnick was born on April 14, 1933, in Los Angeles. After several bouts with bronchitis, he was encouraged to play a wind instrument by his family doctor. He then started playing clarinet; by the time he was twelve, he began composing ("Musical Explorer" web page - intro.htm). He received his B.A. from the University of Denver (while performing with the Denver Symphony on clarinet) and received his M.A. from Mills College, where he studied composition with Leon Kirchner and Darius Milhaud (Gagne 335). His earliest forays into electronic music were pieces composed for theatrical scores while he was Music Director of the Ann Halprin Dance Company. Many of his

Morton Subotnick Morton Subotnick was born in Los Angeles, California in 1933. He is one of the foremost composers of electronic music. In 1961, while teaching at Oakland's Mills College and studying with avant-garde composers Darius Milhaud and Leon Kirchner, he became co-founder and music director of the famed San Francisco Tape Center. Following in the footsteps of John Cage and others, Subotnick collected non-traditional sources of sound (whistles, trash can lids and various metal objects) and utilized their timbres in a composition. He also began combining tape, MIDI (musical instrument digital interface), computer and traditional musical instruments. He used these in a variety of combinations to produce many popular art pieces. Crime and Miracle Movement #1 (excerpt) Movement #3 (excerpt)
Subotnick has been honored with commissions for numerous compositions. Two of the most memorable of these commissions are the1984 Olympics Arts Festival in Los Angeles and Return, commissioned to celebrate the return of Halley's comet, which premiered at Griffith Observatory in Los Angeles. Perhaps the most significant aspect of Subtonick's compositional innovations is his use of live performers to control computer music. All My Hummingbirds have Alibis (excerpt)

As the technology that is used to create music and artwork evolves, so does the outcome of those efforts. When new abilities are given to an artist, ideas which were essentially inconceivable in the past emerge. Morton Subotnick has been at the forefront of the growing genre of computer related art. From his beginnings with the early musical synthesizers to his latest creations utilizing computer sequencing and programming, Subotnick has built up a lengthy repetoire of original and groundbreaking musical projects.
All My Hummingbirds Have Alibis was commissioned by the National Endowment for the Arts and the Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival. It was to be the third and final part of "Music for Three Imaginary Ballets," based on Max Ernst's collage novels. The first two parts of the series are entitled "The Key to Songs" and "And the Butterflies Begin to Sing", written in 1985 and 1988, respectively. The piece has 2 parts- the first beginning with "Slow Evocation" and ends with a ritual dance, and the second begins with solos and duets, ending also with a ritual dance.
The music was scored for MIDI Keyboard, MIDI Mallets, flute, cello, computer, and uses 3 human voices. A sampler was used to transform the human voices, as well as modify the piano, cello, and flute sounds. The computer and sampler were triggered via the MIDI mallets and keyboard, communicating with Interactor software (developed by Mark Coniglio). The sofware has the ability to follow the piano and mallets, so that it knows where in the score the performers are currently playing. By listening for "cues" from the instruments, it can know the tempos of the performers, and if a player misses a note, the computer just skips its parts and waits for the next cue. The software has the power to transform all the instrumental sounds, control the mixer, amplifacation, effects, and many other aspects of the performance, either according to a pre-programmed score, or by mapping the performance of a player to one of the controls.
