Student report : Holley Dobson Sp '99 Morton Subotnick's The Key to Songs Morton Subotnick is a man who has influenced, if not driven, the world of electronic music. From the beginning, he has sought for new and distinctive ways to merge art and technology. His piece The Key to Songs served to combine these two facets. Introduction to Morton Subotnick Morton Subotnick was born in Los Angeles, California on April 13, 1933. He had been battling with bronchitis when his family doctor suggested he take up a wind instrument. He began playing the clarinet and within a few years he was playing concertos and composing music of his own. Subotnick was now twelve years old. Works Leading up to The Key to Songs His first major work was called Silver Apples of the Moon , commissioned by Nonesuch Records specifically for the LP recording medium. This was the first time a piece was commissioned calling for solely electronic music. The album did very well, becoming an American bestseller (in the classical music section). The next year, 1968, Nonesuch Records commissioned another piece called The Wild Bull . It was similar to Sliver Apples of the Moon and dance companies later choreographed both. Over the next seven years, Subotnick composed several more songs for LP:

This project was made possible through a grant from the The Electronic Music Collection is part of the Music School Collection of sound recordings. It is comprised of over 70 recordings, 36 of which have been recently restored and reformatted for research use. Most of these tapes date from the early period of electronic music in the United States (1961-1968) and were created at the Brandeis University Electronic Music Studio by several prominent composers such as Alvin Lucier, Ernst Krenek, Luciano Berio, and John Cage. Many of these recordings are the only known copies that are available to researchers. The titles of these electronic music records are listed below. Morton Subotnick
Morton Subotnick is one of the United States' premier composers of electronic music and an innovator in works involving instruments and other media, including interactive computer music systems. Most of his music calls for a computer part, or live electronic processing; his oeuvre utilizes many of the important technological breakthroughs in the history of the genre.
The work which brought Subotnick celebrity was Silver Apples of the Moon . Written in 1967 using the Buchla modular synthesizer (an electronic instrument built by Donald Buchla utilizing suggestions from Subotnick and Ramon Sender), this work contains synthesized tone colors striking for its day, and a control over pitch that many other contemporary electronic composers had relinquished. There is a rich counterpoint of gestures, in marked contrast to the simple surfaces of much contemporary electronic music. There are sections marked by very clear pulses, another unusual trait for its time; Silver Apples of the Moon was commissioned by Nonesuch Records, marking the first time an original large-scale composition had been created specifically for the disc medium a conscious acknowledgement that the home stereo system constituted a present-day form of chamber music. Subotnick wrote this piece (and subsequent record company commissions) in two parts to correspond to the two sides of an LP. The exciting, exotic timbres and the dance-inspiring rhythms caught the ear of the public the record was an American bestseller in the classical music category, an extremely unusual occurrence for any contemporary concert music at the time.

Morton Subotnick: Composer as Educator hen
Morton Subotnick 's LP Silver Apples of the Moon was released in 1967, it caused a stir: it was the first electronic music album that was created expressly for the LP. Call it a medium-specific piece. And during a time in which the medium as message was all the rage, Subotnick was ahead of the curve in several ways, managing to forge a career over the next 35 years that melded music with technology. But there was deeper side to Subotnick's explorations: he was interested in creating a new kind of music, one that would be available to everyone. In the utopian spirit of the time (and following the lead of John Cage 's idea that anyone could be a musician if they choose to do so) Subotnick became interested in the idea of education and has spent much of his time pursing that end. And while he has done groundbreaking work in traditional educational venues (he helped found CalArts ), what really gets him excited is teaching kids music. And his vision and persistence have paid off - his two Voyager CD-ROM s which teach kids how to compose have sold hundreds of thousand copies in 12 languages and have become the standard music software used by educators around the world.

All of these pieces are marked by sophisticated timbres, contrapuntally rich textures, and sections of continuous pulse suggesting dance. In fact, Silver Apples of the Moon was used as dance music by several companies including the Stuttgart Ballet and Ballet Rambert and The Wild Bull, and later works, including A Sky of Cloudless Sulfur and The Key to Songs, have been choreographed by leading dance companies throughout the world.

by Andrew Duke Morton Subotnick is an electronic music pioneer who is not content to sit back in the proverbial stuffy halls of musical academia. Born in Los Angeles in 1933 and currently residing in New Mexico, he continues to tour the US and Europe as a lecturer/performer, records new compositions, and is active in developing new applications to encourage musical creativity in today's children. You've had many music companies commission you to record pieces in your career, most notable of which was Silver Apples Of The Moon ; composed specifically in two parts to correspond to the two sides on a vinyl LP, and released on Nonesuch in 1967, it helped to acknowledge the presence of the home stereo system. Tell me about this particular work.
"The commission to do Silver Apples Of The Moon Silver Apples , my first thought was to create a piece that people could, by turning knobs or doing something, actually participate with the piece and not just sit back and listen to it. But that wasn't possible, the technology just wasn't there. And so I then went to Plan B which was thinking of a piece which was true and pure music, but had nothing to do with performance, but was the piece that would be in the living room and that's what it turned out to be." Interactivity is a theme in your works, both in your compositions and software programs.

The First Real (and Totally Cool) Composing Space for Kids
By Morton Subotnick Making Music is a creativity tool that encourages children to use their imaginations. Kids start with familiar tunes that introduce the basics of musical structure. Children then apply those lessons as they play in the composition area, where, using simple drawing tools, they can create their owm symphonies. The Central Composition Space Enter notes by drawing on the screen, then duplicate them, turn them upside down and backwards, change the scale, choose any of 16 instruments - the way real composers do. Building Blocks Listen to six simple tunes to learn about structure and repetition, then mix them up and make your own tunes. Create original melodies and rhythms; hear how they sound separately and together. Filp Book Combine three elements - melody, rhythm, and instrumentation - from a musical flip-book.
