Subotnick Speaks
(Tech Talk 2/9/2000) Electronic music pioneer Morton Subotnick will speak in a Media Laboratory Colloquium celebrating the release of Caipirinha Music's CD "Early Modulations: Vintage Volts," an introspective look at the early pioneers of electronic music. Mr. Subotnick will reveal details behind the creation of his 1967 masterpiece Silver Apples of the Moon , demonstrate his creative process, and showcase his new compositions on Wednesday, Feb. 9, 2000 at 4:30pm in Bartos Theater. Mr. Subotnick, co-chair of composition and co-director of CEAIT (Center for Experiments in Art Information and Technology) at California Institute of the Arts, is an innovator in works involving instruments and other media. He was the first composer to be commissioned to write an electronic composition expressly for the phonograph medium, Silver Apples of the Moon (Nonesuch). This now classic work and The Wild Bull (also an electronic commission for Nonesuch) have been choreographed by leading dance companies throughout the world and remain in permanent repertory.

Review by Michael Pellecchia
Does your five to ten year old have musical ability? It's getting harder to tell. There's less music in schools than ever. Piano teachers may or may not perceive your kid's genius, or lack thereof. And besides, of what does musical ability consist, anyway? Making Music might have some of your answers. The author is a well-known composer, Morton Subotnick, who narrates in the overview his ideas behind this program. It allows users to experience "what composing music is like before they embark on a formal music education. In art, students use the `studio art experience,' a modal creative process, where they experience creative processes before they `learn to draw.' " Making Music is the music equivalent. Subotnick says, having watched his daughter paint, that "as children you can be creative in all sorts of activities. . . . but you can't quite do the same thing with making music. . . . in music, if you sing or play it, it's gone as soon as you are finished." True enough. And notation, which composers use, "takes many years of training and practice." His solution is to "make it possible to write and create music as easily as painting on an easel." This program makes it possible to compose "music" without mastering the art of 18th-century Euro-American musical language. So be ready: the music your child will make using this program will not sound like anything you've heard before, unless perhaps you studied music in college. This "music" is made not to please the ear, but to please the user's natural tendency to organize materials of sound. That's all composers do. And if a child demonstrates this proclivity, it can certainly be taken as musical ability.

Morton Subotnick Morton Subotnick was born in Los Angeles, California on April 13, 1933. He graduated with his bacholer's degree at the University of Denver and his master's degree at Mills College, studying composition with Leon Kirchner and Darius Milhaud. This was followed by a teaching position at Mills College from 1959 to 1966. While he was at Mills College, Subotnick co-founded along with Ramon Sender, the San Francisco tape Music Center. Among the people involved in the studio during its early days were Pauline Oliveros and Donald Buchla , an inventor of a voltage controlled synthesizer. Subotnick also served as Music Director of the Ann Halprin Dance Company and the San Francisco Actor's Workshop. It was toward the close of his career at Mills College that Subotnick received a commission from Nonesuch Records to create an electronic music composition specifically for the phonograph record. The result was Silver Apples of the Moon , completed on the Buchla Synthesizer in 1967. The work was considered so successful that Nonesuch offered a second commission to Subotnick. The result was The Wild Bull finished a year later in 1968.

Composition and Collage: Morton Subotnick's The Key to Songs

Collage has served as a powerful compositional technique throughout the twentieth century, boasting such notable practitioners as Stravinsky, Stockhausen, and, more recently, Morton Subotnick. Subotnick's The Key to Songs (1985) is the first in a trilogy of works each modeled on a separate collage "novel" by the Surrealist artist Max Ernst. In each piece of his trilogy, Subotnick attempts to represent musically the bizarre worlds of Ernst's innovative novels. In The Key to Songs, his means include imitation of and musical corollaries to Ernst's visual collages, whose influences range from Freudian psychology to literary theory and games. It is easy to discuss the influence of collage on musical composition; what is more difficult is to provide an analysis demonstrating specific parallels between the two artforms. In the music world, as well as in the art world, the term 'collage' has been a very fluid one. This paper defines two styles of collage, the analytical and the synthetic; explores Subotnick's compositional technique in terms of source material, form, and motives; and discusses the relationships between Ernst's and Subotnick's methodologies. In addition, the paper discusses various linguistic influences on Ernst's art and their translation into Subotnick's musical language. Session Program

"And The Butterflies Begin to Sing" (New World)
The work of Subotnick, a pioneer in the use of electronic music, is not nearly as forbidding as the music of his many imitators. "And the Butterflies Begin to Sing" (1988), scored for string quartet, bass, MIDI keyboard and computer, is full of propulsive, visceral rhythms that bleed into sensuous textures of strings and silvery synthesized sounds. The music is episodic, reflecting the inspiration of "collage novels." In "All My Hummingbirds Have Alibis" (1991), the computer listens and reacts to the MIDI-controlled piano and mallet instruments. Interesting, but the music is more astringent and less compelling, and the sampled text sounds silly. Photo: Keith Holzman Electronic music pioneer Morton Subotnick has been honored by the SEAMUS Board of Directors as recipient of the 1998 SEAMUS Award. This recognition is presented annually to an individual or group of individuals who have contributed greatly to the art and craft of electro-acoustic music. Morton Subotnick's influence on the development of electronically synthesized sound is so profound and widespread that it is difficult to imagine what the field of electro-acoustic music would be like today without his contributions. Perhaps more than any other composer of his generation, he has stayed at the forefront of technological developments - consistently utilizing the latest innovations in his work, and actively participating in the creation of new instruments and techniques. From his early work in the San Francisco Tape Music Center to his masterpieces with the voltage-controlled synthesizer; from his "Ghost Electronics" pieces to the Yamaha MIDI ensemble; from his multi-media opera to his interactive software and CD-ROMs, Morton Subotnick has always been pushing the margins of what is possible in music. Subotnick's interest in the relationship between performers and technology resulted in the composition of a series of "ghost pieces," eleven chamber works for instruments and interactive electronics. The "ghost" score (which contains no audible sounds) consists of a digital program which commands electronic modules to modify the instrumental sounds as they are played from a traditionally notated score. The electronic processing includes changing the pitch, timbre, volume and directionality of the sounds. Thus, the digital program, different for each of the "ghost" works, produces its own set of attacks and rhythms, adding another dimension to the sound of the instrument or voice.
