Christian Soldiers" (1872) y "The Lost Chord" (1877). Sullivan falleció el 22 de noviembre de 1900 en Londres. © eMe epdlp Webmasters: salva@epdlp.com

H.M.S. Pinafore Music: Arthur Sullivan In H.M.S. Pinafore or The Lass That Loved a Sailor , W.S. Gilbert satirizes the snobbery and hypocrisy of the English social system of his day. He tells the story of a lowly able seaman named Ralph who has fallen in love with Josephine, his Captain's daughter. Josephine, however, has been pledged by her father to Sir Joseph Porter, First Lord of the Admiralty. Although Josephine is in love with Ralph, she is determined to remain true to her breeding and marry the man her father has chosen. Sir Joseph, for his part, professes to be a man of new ideals, informing the Captain that "a British sailor is any man's equal, excepting mine," and requiring him to soften his commands to the crew by adding such civilities as "if you please." But when Little Buttercup, a local bumboat woman, lets slip that all is not what it seems, Sir Joseph's liberal notions are put to the test. The much anticipated premiere of H.M.S. Pinafore

The Mikado Music: Arthur Sullivan The idea for The Mikado first sprang into W.S. Gilbert's mind when an old Japanese sword, which had been hanging on the wall of his study for years, suddenly fell from its place. Gilbert took this as an omen and determined to leave his own country alone for a while and turn his biting satire instead towards the East. He did not have to look far to research the subject of his new play. He found all the material he wanted in Knightsbridge, a little village of Japanese immigrants within a mile of his own home in South Kensington. Here, he witnessed the strange arts, devices and lifestyles of this proud race. The story of The Mikado The Mikado was originally staged at the Savoy Theatre in London on March 14, 1885 with Mr. R. Temple as the Mikado, Durward Lely as Nanki-Poo, George Grossmith as Ko-Ko, Rutland Barrington as Pooh-Bah and Leonora Braham as Yum-Yum. The official New York premiere took place on August 19, 1885 at the Fifth Avenue Theatre with a cast that included George Thorne (Ko-Ko), Fred Federici (Mikado), Geraldine Ulmar (Yum-Yum), Courtice Pounds (Nanki-Poo), Fred Billington (Pooh-Bah) and Elsie Cameron (Katisha). A Broadway revival was staged in 1927 at the Royale Theatre with Fred Wright as Ko-Ko, and another revival was staged in 1987 at the Virginia Theatre with Eric Donkin, Marie Baron, John Keane and Arlene Meadows.

28. The Pirates Of Penzance - A Comic Opera By Arthur Sullivan And William S. Gilber
Brief history of the musical by arthur sullivan and William S. Gilbert, plus links to cast albums and sheet music.
http://www.imagi-nation.com/moonstruck/albm66.html
The Pirates of Penzance Music: Arthur Sullivan The Pirates of Penzance tells the story of a young pirate apprentice named Frederic who has come to the end of his indentured period. As it turns out, Frederic was indentured by mistake. His half-deaf nurse had been instructed to apprentice him to a "pilot" but got it a little wrong. At any rate, Frederic has decided to leave the pirate life forever and, though he loves his comrades dearly, devote his life to the extermination of their kind. However, since he is until the stroke of midnight still one of them, he feels obliged to point out the pirates' weaknessthey are too softhearted. Apparently, all a captive must do is plead to being an orphan and he is immediately released! The Pirates of Penzance opened at the Fifth Avenue Theatre in New York on December 31, 1879 with a cast that included J.H. Ryley (Major General), Hugh Talbot (Frederick), Sgr. Broccolini (Pirate King), Fred Clifton (Sergeant), Blanche Roosevelt (Mabel), and Alice Barnett (Ruth). A major Broadway revival featuring Kevin Kline (Pirate King), Rex Smith (Frederic), and Linda Ronstadt (Mabel) opened at the Uris Theatre on January 8, 1981 and ran for 772 performances. A 1983 film version featured Kline, Smith, Ronstadt, and Angela Lansbury.

35. Biography Of Sir Arthur Sullivan
Gilbert and sullivan Archive. Sir arthur sullivan. 1842 1900. by DavidEwen. sullivan was Voltaire. . SAINTSAËNS. Sir arthur sullivan. SIR
http://math.boisestate.edu/gas/html/sullivan2.html
Gilbert and Sullivan Archive
Sir Arthur Sullivan
by David Ewen "Sullivan was as much a satirist in musical notes as Gilbert in the verbal test. Their repartees in collaboration often reminded of the sarcasms of Voltaire."
SIR ARTHUR SEYMOUR SULLIVAN , one of the greatest composers of comic opera, was born in London on May 13, 1842. His father, a bandmaster, soon discovered that his son was unusually gifted: At the age of eight, Arthur could play tolerably well on almost every instrument in the band. When, therefore, Arthur finished four years of preliminary academic study at a private school in Bayswater, he received an appointment as a member of the Chapel Royal school. He possessed a striking voice, and was frequently called upon to sing solos. More important, however, is the fact that during his three years as a chorister he composed many anthems and songs, one of which was sufficiently talented to reach publication in 1855. By 1856, Sullivan was promoted to the rank of "first boy" in the Chapel choir. He had shown such adaptability for music study that, when announcement was made that a Mendelssohn prize had been inaugurated, he was tempted to become a candidate. When the examinations were over it was discovered that, of the nineteen applicants, he was tied with one other young musician for first award-the other student being Joseph Barnby, later a wellknown conductor. A second test was inaugurated to decide between these two applicants; from this, Arthur Sullivan emerged the victor. As a result, Arthur Sullivan became a pupil at the Royal Academy of Music where his teachers included Goss and Sterndale Bennett. He remained there until the Fall of 1858. During this period, he composed an overture which was performed at one of the concerts of the Academy.
