Tchaikovsky

The eminent Russian composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky was born on May 7 (N.S.), 1840, in a settlement adjacent to the Kama-Votkinsk Metal Works (managed by his father) in the Ural Mountains. The first mention of his involvement with music appears in a letter of 1844 that reports him as having helped compose a song, "Mama's in Petersburg." At home he heard folk songs, popular arias, and romances sung by his mother, and pieces played by a mechanical organ, among them excerpts from Mozart's Don Giovanni . (Mozart would remain Tchaikovsky's most beloved composer.) Piano lessons, started about the age of five, continued in Saint Petersburg, where he entered boarding school in 1848.
From 1850 to 1859 he attended the School of Jurisprudence, where he assisted in a choir conducted by Gavriil Lomakin and studied piano with Rudolph Kundinger and harmony with Kundinger's brother. Assigned on graduation to the Ministry of Justice, Tchaikovsky continued to be drawn to music, and in 1861 he began classes sponsored by the Russian Music Society. The year after, he left his job and entered the just-founded Saint Petersburg Conservatory. Working zealously under Anton Rubinstein and Nikolai Zaremba, he received a Silver Medal for his graduation cantata on Johann Schiller's

RUSSICUM
RUSSICUM is a part of the St Petersburg Choir Community NEVA Russicum, which was set up in 1992 by Prof. Andrey Ovechkin, Olga Romanovskaya, Robert Shervenikas, Valeri Vinogradov and Boris Kozin (the present director of the choir). The Community now comprises about 40 professional singers with many years of experience as soloists and/or choir conductors. It has no connection whatever with any state authorities or other organisations in Russia. RUSSICUM ensembles are a capella (voice only) groups of five talented soloists from St Petersburg and Kiev. These groups help each other to promote traditional and contemporary Russian religious songs, as a part of the cultural heritage of Europe, to a broader international public, and their tours in Germany, Belgium, Holland, Switzerland, Scandinavia, USA and the UK have generated a wide circle of friends and supporters. They also assist each other in the planning, preparation and organization of international cultural exchanges and the tours of the particular ensembles. In Russia the choir members sing as soloists in various parishes or work as church choir conductors in the service of the Russian Orthodox church, including the Cathedral of Our Lady of Kazan in the Nevsky Prospekt of St Petersburg. At home the preservation of the original traditions of the Russian vocal school as well as the encouragement of young singers in the field of Christian music are the principal goals of the groups. A special concern is to show the continuity of liturgical music from early times to the present day.

PETER ILYICH TCHAIKOVSKY
A Russian composer known for his colorful and romantic music, Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky is the creator of the magical sounds of "The Nutcracker." Born the son of a mine inspector and a half-French mother on May 7, 1840, Tchaikovsky is known to have dabbled in composition from the age of 14. But it was not until 1862 when he enrolled in the St. Petersburg Conservatory that he would devote his life entirely to music. It was there that Tchaikovsky would produce his first overture. Throughout the 1870's he enjoyed moderate success with the Second and Third Symphonies, operas "The Oprichnik" and "Vakula the Smith" and in the ballet "Swan Lake." However, 1877 marked a dramatic turn in his life, both for the good and the bad. Tchaikovsky married a 28-year-old ex-student to quiet the rumors of his being a homosexual. He also began a strange, platonic relationship with the wealthy widow Nadezhda von Meck, who would support him financially but wished to never meet him. His marriage proved catastrophic leading Tchaikovsky to attempt suicide and flee his wife several months later. He resumed his successful career in the 1880's, composing the "1812 Overture," the "Hamlet Overture-Fantasia," "Symphony No. 5 in E Minor," and the composition sketch to "The Sleeping Beauty," among others. By 1890, he had completed one of his most successful operas, "The Queen of Spades," and made his first and only trip to the United States. After his return, he lent his melodic gifts to the ballet "The Nutcracker," which surprisingly enjoyed little success during his lifetime.

I wrote the first of my fifteen symphonies at age 18, and my second opera, "Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District," when I was only 26. Unfortunately, Stalin hated the opera, and put me on the Enemy Of The People List for life. I nevertheless kept composing the works I wanted to write in private; some of my vocal cycles and 15 string quartets mock the Soviet System in notes. And I somehow was NOT killed in the process! And Harry Potter(c) stole my glasses and broke them! Who would you be?
