The Late Romantics
Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky
Born: Votkinsk, Viatka district, May 7, 1840
Died: St. Petersburg, November 6, 1893
Tchaikovsky studied music sporadically early in his life, but took a job as a government clerk. Hating the post, he turned to music and studied at the newly founded music school in St. Petersburg. Here his compositions garnered much attention and Tchaikovsky was hailed as the hope of Russia's musical future. Yet much of Tchaikovsky's early works were harshly criticized by his peers and teachers, especially by the Russian nationalist composers comprising "The Mighty Five." But his music usually always found favor with the public. Such works include his first three symphonies, the Violin concerto in D major , and the immensely popular Piano Concerto no. 1 in B-flat minor

S hakespeare, the Battle of Borodino and Dante were the sources for three of Tchaikovsky's most popular orchestral works recorded here. He was somewhat nagged into Romeo and Juliet as a subject by Mily Balakirev, a fellow- composer given to organising the musical lives of others, and the result in its first version was not very successfully premiered at Moscow on 14 March 1870, a few weeks before Tchaikovsky's 30th birthday. It was later twice revised before it began to win the widespread acclaim that has at times obscured its intrinsic musical merits. Although styled a 'Fantasy-Overture', the overall design is a symphonic poem in sonata-form with an introduction and an epilogue. It opens with the solemn thoughts of Friar Laurence, and the main part of the work is a contrast between the vivid depiction of street-brawls between the feuding families and the eloquently emotional theme of the tragically appointed love of the title figures.
The music illuminates the essence of the tale, its harmonic subtlety used to build and resolve tension, while the forceful irregular rhythms of the street music point ahead to Stravinsky and beyond.

COMPOSERS
PETER ILYICH TCHAIKOVSKY
Born: May 7, 1840. Kamsko-Votkinsk, Russia
Died: November 6, 1893. St. Petersburg, Russia
In his own words...

"How can one express the indefinable sensations that one experiences while writing an instrumental composition that has no definite subject? It is a purely lyrical process. It is a musical confession of the soul, which unburdens itself through sounds just as a lyric poet expresses himself through poetry... As the poet Heine said, 'Where words leave off, music begins.' " Russian composer. Tchaikovsky is best known for his ballets and symphonies.
In many ways, Tchaikovsky's life and career placed him uncomfortably between different worlds, and this conflict was a central aspect of his creative life. Perhaps this can be seen most clearly in his position as a Russian composer. Russia had a long history of cultural contact with the West. The very European city of St. Petersburg is the greatest example of this dynamic. Tchaikovsky's musical training at the newly founded St. Petersburg conservatory was likewise influenced by European ideals. His success in his studies there landed him a job as a teacher in the new Moscow conservatory. As a member of the musical elite of Russia, he found that his music pleased few. It was too advanced and modern for his Western-trained peers, and at the same time too Western in its outlook to please the growing and influential champions of a Russian national style.
He did begin to find favor with the Russian public, especially with his first symphonies. At the same time, his homosexuality also placed him in an untenable position. Unable to come to terms with it, he married an admirer, hoping to resolve his problems in domestic life. This proved a bitter failure, and in desperation he fled both the marriage and his post at the conservatory. He was fortunate to have at this time the support of the eccentric Nadezhda von Meck, allowing him to recover emotionally and continue his career, touring Europe and America. This period of despair is framed by two periods of great creativity. Before the crisis, he had written many of his most famous works, including his first three symphonies, the ballet

The memorable melodies, strong colors and uninhibited emotionalism of Pyotr Il'yich Tchaikovsky have long made him one of the most widely popular of all composers. These same qualities have also perhaps made it harder for some critics and professionals to fully appreciate Tchaikovsky's originality and accomplishments. In these biographical essays it has been noted how the opera is at the core of Mozart and the lied is central to Schubert. With Tchaikovsky, his essence is in many ways the idealized fairy tale world of the classic ballet, and this colorful and dramatic spirit pervades much of his music, including the great symphonies.
Pyotr Il'yich Tchaikovsky was born to a middle class family in Votkinsk, Russia in 1840. Like Schumann, a composer who had a strong influence on him, Tchaikovsky dutifully studied law before following his true calling by entering the St. Petersburg Conservatory where he studied from 1863 to 1865. Among his teachers was Anton Rubinstein with whom he studied composition. In 1866 he went to Moscow to become the professor of harmony at the new conservatory headed by Nicholas Rubinstein (Anton's brother). In his first two years, he wrote his first symphony (Winter Daydreams) and first opera (Voyevod).
