Peter Ilich Tchaikovsky
Perhaps the best Russian composer of all time, Peter Ilich Tchaikovsky was a genius for creating melodies, mastering musical structure, and highly developing the sense of musical drama. Born in Votkinsk, in the Ural Mountains of European Russia, his father was a government inspector of mines. Even when Peter started the piano at the age of seven, through until he was nineteen, he never showed any signs of musical talent. But when he was nineteen, Tchaikovsky realized that he really wanted to be a musician. Continuing his job as a clerk in the Ministry of Justice, he began to study theory and compose. When the great Nicholas Rubinstein founded the Moscow Conservatory, he realized that he needed talented musicians to teach as professor, therefore hiring Tchaikovsky. He was a very talented composer, no doubt, but most of the other professors believed he was too young to be an actual skilled professor. For twelve years Tchaikovsky held the position, and even wrote a book on harmony to prove he was a true professor of music. Not all of Russia was convinced that Tchaikovsky, however. The critics and other composers such as Berlioz and Liszt saw him as a lucky wanna-be, and sniped at him and his works. Strenuous work and pressure as a composer, critic, and teacher brought Tchaikovsky brought him to a state of nervous collapse. Fortunately, a music lover and wealthy widow who singled out young, talented composers helped Tchaikovsky out, paid him for thirteen, feeling pity and sorrow for the young man.

Pyotr Ilich Tchaikovsky (1840-1893)
(Playing in MIDI format: Swan Lake - Scene) Leading Russian composer of the late 19 th century, whose works are notable for their melodic inspiration and their orchestration. Tchaikovsky is regarded as the master composer for classical ballet, as demonstrated by his scores for Swan Lake, The Nutcracker , and Sleeping Beauty
His life
Pyotr Ilich Tchaikovsky was born on 25 April 1840. His father was superintendent of government-owned mines. Because his mother was half French, and it was a customary practice among upper-class Russians of the period, he had a French governess. Tchaikovsky was musically precocious, but his interest in the subject was not actively encouraged because his parents considered that it had an unhealthy effect on an already neurotically excitable child. He adored his governess, but she was dismissed in 1848 when his father changed his post and moved to Moscow and then to St. Petersburg, where the boy entered the preparatory department of the School of Jurisprudence in 1850. There he was obviously disturbed by being treated as a "country bumpkin," but he soon settled down happily. His state of mind was more seriously affected in 1854 when he was 14 and his mother, whom he loved with all the ardor of an acutely introspective child, died of cholera. To alleviate the distress caused to him both by her death and by his easygoing father's comparative indifference to it, he composed a short waltz for piano and even thought of composing an opera. His abnormal love for his now-deceased mother and the ineffectualness of his father did nothing to hinder his latent homosexuality, and the disciplinary regime of the all-male School of Jurisprudence cannot have helped. During these school days, desultory singing, piano, and harmony lessons were all the musical education he received, complemented by increasingly numerous visits to the opera, which had a lasting influence on his musical taste.

Selected list of works
Born in Kamsko-Votkinsk, the 7th of May 1840, Tchaikovsky was the second eldest of six children. At the age of six he could read French and German and at seven wrote verses in French and began piano lessons. He spent the first eight years of his life comparatively settled, but in 1848 his father, a mining engineer, resigned his government post which brought about a difficult period of constant moves. In 1850 Tchaikovsky began attending the St. Petersburg School of Jurisprudence, becoming a clerk in the Ministry of Justice in 1859. He studied with Nicolai Zaremba until the opening of the new St. Petersburg Conservatory in 1862, to which he transferred. The next year Tchaikovsky left his job in the Ministry of Justice to study full time at the Conservatory. Anton Rubenstein, the director of the conservatory, took an interest in Tchaikovsky and had him study everything including conducting. He was always terrified of facing an orchestra (even when in great demand as a conductor), fearing his head would fall from his shoulders. For that reason he conducted with his left hand under his chin to keep it attached.

Tchaikovsky, Peter Ilyich [ily E I E
Pronunciation Key
Tchaikovsky, Peter Ilyich , Russian composer, b. Kamsko-Votkinsk. Variant transliterations of his name include Tschaikovsky and Chaikovsky. He is a towering figure in Russian music and one of the most popular composers in history. The son of a mining inspector, Tchaikovsky studied music as a child. At 19 he became a government clerk and at 21 entered the St. Petersburg Conservatory, where he studied composition with Anton Rubinstein. He graduated in 1865 and taught theory and composition at Nicholas Rubinstein's Moscow Conservatory from 1865 to 1878. An annuity from his wealthy patroness, Mme von Meck (whom he never met though he corresponded with her for 14 years and dedicated his Fourth Symphony to her in 1878), made it possible for him to devote himself entirely to composition. Tchaikovsky wrote 11 operas, four concertos, six symphonies, a great number of songs and short piano pieces, three ballets, three string quartets, suites and symphonic poems, and numerous other works. His compositions sustained him throughout his continuous battle with his own nature. In 1877 Tchaikovsky made a disastrous marriage in order to defeat the torment of his homosexuality and to deny the spreading rumors of it. His work was again his consolation when Mme van Meck terminated her friendship and support without apparent reason. Tchaikovsky was opposed to the aims of the Russian nationalist composers and used Western European forms and idioms, although his work instinctively reflects the Russian temperament. His orchestration is rich, and his music is melodious, intensely emotional, and often melancholy.

of the 19th century, considered the master composer of classical ballet, Tchaikovsky's work remains some of the most beloved music ever written. His ballet "The Nutcracker" is a perennial favorite, performed all over at Christmas time, though he considered it inferior to his "Sleeping Beauty" which Disney adapted for the animated feature of the same name. Swan Lake, Romeo and Juliet, the 1812 Overture all these are among the best-known staples of "classical" music, enjoyed by concert-goers the world over. The next time you hear the U.S. Marine Band playing the incredibly stirring and victorious 1812 Overture, with its booming cannons, you might recall the fact that it was written by a gay man. I don't know if you'd want to mention it to the Marine boys in the band or not. Don't ask, don't tell.... Thanks to the camera, we don't have to speculate about what Tchaikovsky looked like.

Peter Ilich Tchaikovsky
The eminent Russian composer Peter Ilich Tchaikovsky was born on May 7 (N.S.), 1840, in a settlement adjacent to the Kama-Votkinsk Metal Works (managed by his father) in the Ural Mountains. The first mention of his involvement with music appears in a letter of 1844 that reports him as having helped compose a song, "Mama's in Petersburg." At home he heard folk songs, popular arias, and romances sung by his mother, and pieces played by a mechanical organ, among them excerpts from Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's Don Giovanni. (Mozart would remain Tchaikovsky's most beloved composer.) Piano lessons, started about the age of five, continued in Saint Petersburg, where he entered boarding school in 1848.
From 1850 to 1859 he attended the School of Jurisprudence, where he assisted in a choir conducted by Gavriil Lomakin and studied piano with Rudolph Kundinger and harmony with Kundinger's brother. Assigned on graduation to the Ministry of Justice, Tchaikovsky continued to be drawn to music, and in 1861 he began classes sponsored by the Russian Music Society. The year after, he left his job and entered the just-founded Saint Petersburg Conservatory. Working zealously under Anton Rubinstein and Nikolai Zaremba, he received a Silver Medal for his graduation cantata on Johann Schiller's An die Freude in December 1865.
Tchaikovsky taught theory in Moscow, joining the faculty of the new Moscow Conservatory when it opened in September 1866. During his 11 years there, he composed his Piano Concerto no. 1 (1875), the ballet Swan Lake (1876), four operas, three symphonies, and many smaller works. He also established close ties with the composers of the nationalist group known as "The Five," especially Mily Balakirev and Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov; the critic Vladimir Stasov called him the "sixth member of their circle."
