Virgil Thomson is probably best remembered for his scores for a handful of films including, Louisiana Story, The Plow that Broke the Plains and The River , plus his comic opera, Four Saints in Three Acts Thomson was a pupil of Nadia Boulanger in Paris where he lived for many years. He taught music at Harvard, played the organ at King's Chapel, Boston and was the respected yet feared music critic of the New York Herald Tribune . As Leonard Bernstein remarked after his death, "Virgil was loving and harsh, generous and mordant, simple but cynical, son of the hymnal yet highly sophisticated. We all loved his music and rarely performed it. Most of us preferred his unpredictable and provocative prose." Virgil Thomson had a great influence on the work of his fellow composers particularly Aaron Copland. This album eschews Virgil Thomson's more progressive music in favour of four of his more immediately attractive and accessible scores. The excellent booklet notes, by Marina and Victor Ledlin, include Virgil Thomson's own extensive programme notes from the first performances of his works. Sedares and his Wellington ensemble clearly enjoy this predominantly jolly outgoing music.

Virgil Thomson (1896-1989) Virgil Thomson, whose centennial was celebrated in 1996, was a many faceted American composer of great originality and a music critic of singular brilliance. Born in Kansas City, Missouri on 25 November 1896, Thomson studied at Harvard. After a prolonged period in Paris where he studied with Nadia Boulanger and met Cocteau, Stravinsky, Satie, and the artists of Les Six, he returned to the United States where he was chief music critic for the New York Herald Tribune from 1937 to 1951. Virgil Thomson with Gertrude Stein Virgil Thomson composed in almost every genre of music. Utilizing a musical style marked by sharp wit and overt playfulness, Thomson produced a highly original body of work rooted in American speech rhythms and hymnbook harmony. His music was most influenced by Satie's ideals of clarity, simplicity, irony, and humor. Among his most famous works are the operas Four Saints in Three Acts and The Mother of Us All (both with texts by Gertrude Stein with whom he formed a legendary artistic collaboration), scores to The Plow That Broke the Plains and The River (films by Pare Lorentz), and Louisiana Story (film by Robert Flaherty). In addition to his compositions, he was the author of eight books, including an autobiography. Included in his many honors and awards are the Pulitzer Prize, a Brandeis Award, the gold medal for music from the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters, the National Book Circle Award, the Kennedy Center Honors, and 20 honorary doctorates.

Virgil Thomson The Composer in conversation with Bruce Duffie
Over the years, I've had the privilege and the pleasure of interviewing performers and creators of so-called Classical Music. Some have been well-known, others labor quietly without much general recognition. A very few are larger-than-life figures who dominate the scene. Virgil Thomson was one of those major icons. When setting up the conversation early in 1985, I'd told him up front that besides the usual concert music I wanted to inquire about his operas. He was happy to speak with me, and during the course of our 60 minute chat, he occasionally corrected my words, and even admonished me about some vague questions with imprecise language. In the end, though, he was pleased, and gave me a cheery "Right-oh!" Here is much of our encounter.........
Bruce Duffie : In Baker's Biographical Dictionary , Nicholas Slonimsky mentions that you've ‘achieved a popular universality in music.' Virgil Thomson : I don't know what he means. ‘Popular universality' means that everybody loves you. He may be referring to the fact that my music, melodically and harmonically is what is often called ‘available.' That is to say, you can understand it if you try. I think that's what he means. BD : The public can understand it if its tries?
