Virgil Thomson - Symphonies. Symphony on a Hymn Tune; Symphony No. 2 in C major; Symphony No. 3; Pilgrims and Pioneers. New Zealand Symphony Orchestra; James Sedares, conductor. Naxos 8.559022 (64'21). One of a Kind Truly creative composers rarely practice one style. Still, whatever they do, they're usually typecast, and that's because we want simple, easy answers. A real original like Virgil Thomson (1896-1989), however, remained himself no matter what. The brashness and sweetness that marked him as a person are in his music, too. And though sometimes described as a neo-classic composer, his three symphonies, recorded together for the first time here, never sound like the works of his contemporaries in this form Aaron Copland, Roy Harris, Walter Piston, and David Diamond. Tommasini's recent biography almost, but not quite, pegs Thomson as a gay composer. Of course he was so were Copland and so is Diamond but Thomson, being both elusive and diverse, resists even that. His symphonic outings are quirky and thoroughly imaginative. The earliest

ANTHONY TOMMASINI
Virgil Thomson: Composer on the Aisle
Written with exclusive full access to Virgil Thomson's papers, here is the first full-scale account of Thomson's experiences as a composer, influential critic, and gay man.
This biography shows how Thomson grew up in turn-of-the-century Kansas City, and recounts how an eccentric, but even then oddly self-confident boy took his first steps in the arts, guided by a troubled older man who was a closeted homosexual. It chronicles Thomson's long struggle to accept his sexuality "I didn't want to be queer"as he searched for a place in the wider world in army service in World War I, at Harvard, and in 1920s Paris, where he finally came to terms with himself as both a gay man and a composer. In Paris, Thomson's musical ambitions crystallized, as he studied with Nadia Boulanger and embarked on a collaboration with Gertrude Stein that would produce the pioneering opera Four Saints in Three Acts . From that point on, Thomson was a figure to reckon with in American music. This biography vividly portrays his often rivalrous relationships with fellow composers such as Aaron Copland, his penchant for settling scores as chief music critic on the New York Herald Tribune, his lasting impact on younger composers such as Leonard Bernstein and Ned Rorem, and, through it all, an unending struggle to write, and gain a hearing for his music. The result of this involving narrative is a classic American biography of a classic American character.

Eisler conducting a rehearsal in the 1950s in East Germany. By Virgil Thomson
New York Herald Tribune
March 11, 1948 The impressiveness is due less to any profound originality, as in the case of his master, Arnold Schönberg, or in that of his sometime model, the German-language works of Kurt Weill, than to his graceful and to his delicate taste. Eisler's music, whether the style of it is chromatic and emotional, diatonic and formalist, or strictly atonal in the dodecaphonic manner, always has charm. It has charm because the tunes are pretty, the textures bright and light, the expressive intentions thoroughly straightforward and clear. Eisler is that rare specimen, a German composer without weight. He uses no heaviness, makes no insistence. Alone among the works played last night, his Violin Sonata indulged, in its final movement, in climactic expansion and frank virtuosity. Everything else was gossamer, elf-like. Also, his rhythm was invariably alive; and this is perhaps his rarest virtue among German composers of our century, so notably lacking in metrical variety and rhythmic ease. It is a matter of regret to this reviewer that the American theater is to lose a workman so gifted, so skillful, so imaginative. Let us hope that, pending revision of his case that might permit him to return to this country, his musical works may come to us regularly from Europe, where professional engagements galore, it would seem, await him.
