Two Knutsford queries, please. 2) A mere elusive question. My mother was given the name 'Furniss' on her birth cert., and was known throughout long life as 'Furness'. Why she was so named was always a mystery to her. None of her 5 brothers and sisters (all Manchester-born) was given an unusual name. My wife has noticed the photograph, also on p.26, of the Old Vicarage. Its caption mentions 'Margaret Furnes', who died in 1716. We wonder if nearly 200 years later the name was in local circulation in some way, and for some reason my grandfather decided to use it as a Christian name for his daughter. He must have known about the Old Vicarage, which I take to be near the laundry. But he was a Baptist, not an Anglican. Thanks for your help. Donald Read

DA CAPO'S "WATER MUSIC" TORU TAKEMITSU (1930-1996) was born in Tokyo, Japan. Although he studied composition privately with Yasuji Kiyose, Toru Takemitsu is largely self-taught. He turned his lack of formal training into a unique development of style and technique, blending various Western influences (including but certainly not limited to, French Impressionism, Webern, and Stravinsky) with the musical traditions of Japan and other Asian countries. Recognition came in the late 1950s, first with Stravinsky's praise for Takemitsu's Requiem for Strings, and then with prizes for three other works. By the 1960s he had renewed his interest in tradfitional Japanese instruments, the results of which appear in such works as the score for the film Seppuku (1962). Toru Takemitsu was aware of his position along the East/West musical continuum. He had stated that he did not want to adopt one musical art into the other, nor to blend the two. He preferred, instead, "to concentrate upon creating an individualistic art capable of illuminating the human condition." Mr. Takemitsu served as artistic director of the Festival d"Automnee (Paris, 1978); composer-in-residence for the Colorado Music Festival (1983), Aldeburgh Festival (Suffolk, 1984), and others; guest lecturer at Yale, Harvard, Cambridge, Massachusetts and Boston Universities; and more. Festivals held in his honor include the "Takemitsu Festival" on Tokyo, 1974, and "The Music of Toru Takemitsu" in Buffalo, 1977. He was made an honorary member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters in 1984, a membre de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres (France) in 1985, and honored by several other prestigious organizations. His music has been extensively recorded and has secured numerous prizes including the Prix Italia, the Incentive Prize (Japan), the 1990 Prix International Maurice Ravel Award (Paris), the 1994 Grawemeyer Award for Music Composition (US), and others worldwide. Also know for his film scores as for his concert hall music, he was an influential participant in Japan's New Wave Cinema of the 1960s and 1970s and wrote music for nearly one hundred films including Woman in the Dunes, Ran, and Black Rain.

    Summary
Sometime around 1412, Joan of Arc was born in Domremy , France. It was a small village, and Joan grew up in a peasant family. Although she was known for her skill and her hard work, she seemed fairly ordinary except for her extreme piousness. In 1425, around age 13, Joan started hearing "voices" which she claimed were the voices of Saint Catherine Saint Margaret , and Saint Michael . She said these voices commanded her to aid the Dauphin , Charles, in his fight against England and Burgundy , and to see him crowned as the King of France at Reims . Reims was the traditional location where French kings were crowned. But because Reims was in English hands, Charles had not been able to hold a coronation ceremony yet, though his father had been dead for years.

In the footsteps of Joan of Arc "Joan, without shrine or portrait, you knew that in the heroes' tomb beats the heart of the living..." In Rouen, the memory of Joan of Arc is everywhere : the old market place, saint Ouen, Maiden's Tower , the Seine... To discover these spots where the last events of Joan of Arc life are taking place, displace with the mouse in the red square located in the right of the draft Captured near CompiÈgne, Joan of Arc was brought to Rouen for judgement around Christmas 1430. She was held in the tower of a l3th century fortress that would later be known as the "Tour de la Pucelle" or Maiden's Tower. The remains of this tower can stili be seen at 102, rue Jeanne d'Arc Joan was in fact brought only once to the "Tour Jeanne d'Arc", or Joan of Arc Tower There the judges threatened her with torture but backed down when faced with her pious demeanour. It should be noted that even though charged with heresy before an ecclesiastical court, she was placed in a civil prison and was guarded by English jailers rather than by women.
