Viktor Ullmann (1898-1944) Viktor Ullmann, Komponist, Pianist und Musikkritiker, wurde 1898 in Schlesien als Sohn eines österreichischen Offiziers geboren. Er studierte von Oktober 1918 bis Mai 1919 in Arnold Schönbergs "Seminar für Komponisten" an den Schwarzwaldschen Schulen in Wien. Seit 1919 in Prag lebend und nunmehr tschechischer Staatsbürger, wurde Ullmann auf Schönbergs Empfehlung Anfang 1920 Assistent von Alexander Zemlinsky, dem musikalischen Chef des Prager Neuen Deutschen Theaters. Sieben Jahre später leitete er als Erster Dirigent die Oper am Theater in Aussig, verließ jedoch nach einer Saison diese Stellung und gelangte über Zürich nach Stuttgart, wo er in einem Buchladen der Antroposophischen Gesellschaft arbeitete. Als Jude, Antroposoph und Schönberg-Schüler gleichsam dreifach "entartet" im "Dritten Reich", sah Ullmann sich gezwungen, Deutschland zu verlassen. Er ging 1933 zurück nach Prag und studierte - neben vielfältiger musikpädagogicher und journalistischer Tätigkeit - am Vierteltonseminar von Alois Hába. Seit 1923 wurden Kompositionen Ullmanns öffentlich aufgeführt; sein Oeuvre bis 1942 umfasst 3 Opern, 4 Klaviersonaten, Kammermusikwerke, Liederzyklen und Chormusik. Am 8. September 1942 wurde er mit seiner Frau in das Konzentrationslager Theresienstadt, 60 km nordwestlich von Prag, deportiert. In diesem "Vorzeigelager" der nationalsozialistischen Machthaber schrieb Ullmann zahlreiche Werke, u. a. die Oper "Der Kaiser von Atlantis oder die Todverweigerung". Dort entstand 1943 auch das 3. Streichquartett op. 46.

Aan alles is te horen dat Ullmann een vooruitstrevende componist was, wiens uitgangspunten aansluiting vonden bij Sch¶nberg, Mahler en Kurt Weill. Pianosonate 6 maakt van de drie pianowerken de meeste indruk, misschien omdat hier de geest van Bach in doorklinkt? Opvallend in het pianowerk van Ullmann is de zelfstandigheid waarmee onafgebroken de linker- en rechterhand van de pianist te werk moeten gaan. From http://www.grovemusic.com Ullmann, Viktor (Josef) In the autumn of 1927 he spent a season as head of the opera in Aussig (now Usti nad Labem), where he gave dazzling proof of his conducting talent. On his return to Prague he remained without a permanent post for a year. Performances of his Concerto for Orchestra, in Prague (1929) and Frankfurt (1930), aroused great interest. The second version of the Schoenberg-Variationen, performed by Franz Langer at the 1929 festival of the ISCM, in Geneva, brought Ullmann to international attention. He was engaged by the Zurich Schauspielhaus as a conductor and composer of incidental music (192931). Coming under the influence of Rudolf Steiner's anthroposophy, he gave up every kind of musical activity over the next two years, and ran an anthroposophical bookshop in Stuttgart 'in order to render direct service to the anthroposophical movement'. Ullmann's development as a composer falls into three main periods. In the first, from 1920 to the early 1930s, the initial influence on his work was that of Schoenberg, but already from about 1924 he looked increasingly to Berg. He testified to his admiration for Wozzeck in a number of letters and articles. The Schoenberg-Variationen combine strict formal construction with playful pianistic verve. The second phase began in about 1933, when he began to change his style. At this point he took up an intermediate stance, with the intention of 'exploring what remains to be discovered in the realms of tonally functional harmony or filling the gap between romantic and ''atonal'' harmony'. Dissonant harmony which nonetheless retains links to functional tonality and polyphonic writing characterized the structures of the first four piano sonatas and the song cycles of the second half of the 1930s, as well as his most important stage work, Der Sturz des Antichrist. In this opera he followed Berg's example in using the formal types of 'absolute' music (such as sonata form and fugue) as the basis of his structures.

MUSIC BEHIND WALLS Composers First Viktor Ullmann Viktor Ullmann Birthdate: January 1, 1898 Birthplace: Teschen, Czech Republic Over these years Ullmann also produced a number of original compositions; two of the most prominent were his Symphonic Fantasy and Variations and Fugue on a Theme by Arnold Schoenberg . After just one season at Aussig, Ullmann returned for uncertain reasons to Prague, where he advertised his services as a teacher and wrote more pieces, including a Concerto for Orchestra . While working as a conductor and music director at the Zurich Theater from 1929-1931, Ullmann developed intensified interest in the study of anthroposophy, a school of thought based in Dornach, Switzerland and led by the writings of Rudolf Steiner. Anthroposophists believe in the ability of human intellect to transcend the physical world and lead to ultimate levels of pure spirituality. From 1931-1933 Ullmann gave up his musical work entirely to live in Stuttgart and run an anthroposophist bookshop. The rise to power of the Nazi party in early 1933, however, led him back to Prague from Germany, and back to a life of music as well. Once back in the Czech lands, Ullmann busied himself in a number of different music-related activities. Besides continuing to compose and teach, the composer went “back to school” himself, taking lessons with the modernist composer Alois Haba. Other occupations included contributing to radio broadcasts, publishing music reviews, and participating in musical societies.
