His best loved works have a lyrical, pastoral feel - the 'Fantasia on a Theme of Thomas Tallis', 'The Lark Ascending' and the Third and Fifth Symphonies - but he was also capable of anguished feelings, like those expressed in the Fourth and Sixth Symphonies. In his long career, he also wrote several excellent film scores. Vaughan Williams drew his inspiration from English folk-songs, hymn tunes and Purcell's 'Odes'. He befriended the composer Gustav Holst, who had similar ideals. Vaughan Williams' interest in folk-song deepened as he travelled round Norfolk, Suffolk and Essex, and he collected over 800 old melodies. Their influence can be seen in works like the three 'Norfolk Rhapsodies', and his first published work, the song 'Linden Lea', which appeared in 1902. His other strong inspiration came from the works of the American poet Walt Whitman. He used Whitman's words for the piece 'Towards the Unknown Region', which he wrote for the Leeds Festival. Walt Whitman also provided the inspiration for Vaughan Williams' First Symphony. Since 1903, Vaughan Williams had been working on using more of his words in a massive choral and orchestral work. This piece, the 'Sea Symphony', was completed in 1909, and received its premiere at the Leeds Festival in 1910. In the second half of this concert, by way of contrast, Rachmaninov performed his own Second Piano Concerto. The previous year, at the Three Choirs Festival in Gloucester, Vaughan Williams's 'Fantasia on a Theme of Thomas Tallis' was followed by Elgar conducting his 'Dream of Gerontius'. On both occasions, Vaughan Williams' works were strong enough to be well received. The 'Fantasia' was particularly important for him because in it he felt he had at last found a distinct and personal language.
