He developed an interest in Brazilian folk music, which became the strongest influence on his works. A series of compositions which he called ranging from an instrumental solo to an orchestral work, employ a synthesis of the different modes of Brazilian folk and popular music. Outstanding are No. 7 (1924), for strings and woodwinds, No. 10 (1926), for orchestra and chorus, and No. 11 (1928; premiere, 1942), for piano and orchestra. He visited Paris (c.1923-26), conducted various orchestras in Europe, and became well known there; but it was not until his music was played at the New York World's Fair (1939-40) that he became known in the United States. In 1932 he was appointed director of musical education in Brazil. He came to the United States (1944-45) to conduct various orchestras in performances of his works. His compositions, including five symphonies, several operas, concertos, chamber music, and songs, number about 2,000. Although these are of uneven quality, his best works, such as Bachiana's brasileira's No. 1 (1930), written in homage to Bach, display great originality and vitality.

World-wide FREE postage on CD purchases HEITOR VILLA-LOBOS by Dr David C F Wright I have often heard it said that Villa-Lobos wrote too much music and the implication is that he never made time to construct a masterpiece! But prolific outputs are known throughout the history of music and it could be said that people such as Haydn and Mozart produced so much that not all of it is of the highest standard or appeal. Villa-Lobos would say that composition was not necessarily inspiration but a therapeutic necessity. If he did not compose he was ill. He simply had to write music. Villa-Lobos was an ordinary man. It may be true to say that he was quaint or homely. He was not an arrogant man but a very hard-working musician. He pottered around his house with his hair all over the place, wearing curious slippers and often with an overweight cigar in his mouth. He also had domestic skills and one of the few composers who had a winning personality that both made and kept friends. His mother, Noemia Umbelina was born in Rio de Janeiro in 1859 whereas his father, Raul, was born in 1862. Their marriage took place in 1884. Their first child, Bertha, known as Lulucha, was born in 1885. Heitor was born on the 5th March 1887 the year before slavery was abolished in Brazil. Carmen, nicknamed Bilita, was born in 1888. On 17th January 1889 Carmen and Heitor were baptised at Sao Jose Church in Rio de Janeiro. Later that year Brazil was declared a republic.

Villa-Lobos's worklist grew at the rate of undergrowth in the Matto Grosso and keeping some sort of track of it poses major problems exacerbated by his nomadic lifestyle, language issues and sources across Europe and the Americas. Villa-Lobos was not alone in profusion of output. Milhaud and Martinu, both of a similarly gallivanting tendency (by choice or circumstance), produced deep and spreading acres of music. Like these two composers, Villa-Lobos had his Parisian years and spent time in the USA. Milhaud is an interesting comparison; he is as indebted as Villa-Lobos promises to be to Classic Produktion Osnabruck - better known to record collectors as CPO. Milhaud's dozen symphonies are all available on CPO, now in a boxed set. There are already two volumes of the Villa-Lobos Symphonies on CPO. These are CPO 999 568-2 (symphonies 1 and 11) [ review ]and CPO 999 525-2 (symphonies 4 and 12). The project is in the apt and steady hands of SWR-Radio-Sinfonieorchester Stuttgart conducted by Carl St. Clair. In fact the symmetry between Milhaud and Vila-Lobos is perfect; both wrote a dozen symphonies.
