Nothing African about it - this one's inspired by the minimalists of the 20th century, a deliberate step away from the business of mainstream classical music, whether by Stravinsky, Stockhausen, or Steve Reich. L'irresolutezza è il tratto dominante di ciascun carattere, tratto che Kentridge lascia spesso sconfinare nel comico paragonandola alle atmosfere della sua città, nel sud dell'Africa, anch'essa ombra di un impero che sta scomparendo.

Kevin Volans Volans Netherlands Wind Ensemble Most of the pieces on this disc are likely to be labelled 'post-modernist'. The design historian David Brett has pointed out that modernism in architecture began with a break in traditional building methods and materials and with the re-invention of style: for example, the Victorian Gothic. Invented style and its capricious relationship with material has remained as recurrent a feature of modernism as stylistic purity and logic. It is the obverse side of the coin: the 'bad penny' that keeps turning up. Modernism is not a style but a tenet: nothing is given - there is no received language. In this sense I consider myself to be a committed modernist. In the mid-1980s I began writing pieces containing as many different ideas or styles as possible because I was bored with the dogged predictability and dogma of the 'one-idea piece' - the composition etude. Underlying the notion of a concept-led piece (be it serial, minimalist or whatever) is the hope that a consistent method will guarantee that the right choices will be made. A problem with this is that it ignores time. My idea of good compositional technique lies in choosing the right note for the right instrument at the right moment.
