Melinda Wagner
Melinda Wagner was born in Philadelphia and received graduate degrees in Music Composition from the University of Chicago and the University of Pennsylvania. Her teachers included Richard Wernick, George Crumb, Shulamit Ran, and Jay Reise. Commissioned by Paul Lustig Dunkel and the Westchester Philharmonic, Concerto for Flute, Strings, and Percussion was awarded the 1999 Pulitzer Prize in Music. The Chicago Symphony Orchestra has commissioned two major works – Falling Angels (1992) and a piano concerto (2002) for Emanuel Ax. Ms. Wagner’s works have also been performed by the American Composers Orchestra, New York New Music Ensemble, Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, Network for New Music, Orchestra 2001, San Francisco Contemporary Players, and other leading organizations. Other commissions have come from the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, Barlow Endowment for Music Competition, Mary Flagler Cary Charitable Trust, Koussevitzky Foundation, Fromm Foundation, the American Brass Quintet, and guitarist David Starobin. She is the recipient of numerous honors including a Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellowship, the Prince Prize, three ASCAP Young Composer Awards, and resident fellowships from the MacDowell Colony and Yaddo. Concerto for Flute, Strings, and Percussion is recorded on the Bridge label with Paul Lustig Dunkel as soloist with the Westchester Philharmonic, Mark Mandarano conducting.

Her works have been performed by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Denver Symphony Orchestra, American Composers Orchestra, National Orchestra of Colombia, New York New Music Ensemble, the Syracuse Society for New Music, the Contemporary Chamber Players, and Orchestra 2001. She has been honored with a Guggenheim fellowship, grants from the Illinois Arts Council and Meet The Composer, Inc., three ASCAP Young Composer awards, and resident fellowships from the MacDowell Colony and Yaddo. She has received commissions from the Ernst and Young Emerging Composers Fund for the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the Sylvia and Danny Kaye Playhouse, the New York New Music Ensemble, and the Syracuse Society for New Music. Falling Angels Concerto for Flute, Strings and Percussion won the 1999 Pulitzer Prize for Music.

Melinda Wagner has been awarded the 1999 Pulitzer Prize in Music for her Concerto for Flute, Strings and Percussion. The work was commissioned and premiered by Paul Lustig Dunkel and the Westchester Philharmonic and was premiered last May.

Photo courtesy Theodore Presser Company n the field of music, if I weren't so busy, I would return to teaching. I'd also really like to coach chamber music or conduct. Outside of music, I'd really enjoy working in a library, however one that is pre-computer! I love to work with file cards. I would also enjoy making furniture. Of course, I don't know how; but I'd love to learn. If I had even more time, I'd be an athlete. I used to run long distance but then family and professional obligations just took over. I would run marathons. Of course, I'm running one now, aren't we all! [Ed.     April 12 - Philadelphia-born New Jersey resident Melinda Wagner 's Concerto for Flute, Strings and Percussion has been awarded the 1999 Pulitzer Prize for Music. The $5000 award is given for a distinguished musical composition of significant dimension by an American that has had its first performance in the United States during the past year. Written for flutist/conductor Paul Lustig Dunkel , Ms. Wagner's Concerto was premiered by him on May 30, 1998 in a performance with the Westchester Philharmonic conducted by Mark Mandarano in Purchase NY in celebration of the orchestra's 15th anniversary . Dunkel and Mandarano subsequently performed the Concerto in New York City with the American Composers Orchestra at Carnegie Hall on September 27, 1998. The work has also been scheduled by the Illinois Chamber Symphony and the Oakland-East Bay (CA) Symphony. A member of the
