Wagner, Richard composer germany 22 May 1813, Leipzig - 13 Feb 1883, Venezia: Palazzo Vendramin Real name: Wagner, Wilhelm Richard Grave location: Bayreuth: Villa 'Wahnfried' (In de tuin) Richard Wagner was born in Leipzig. The man who was officially his father, a clerk at the police court, died when he was very young. His mother married the painter Ludwig Geyer and possibly he was Wagner's real father. When he was seven the family moved to Dresden, where he received his first musical education at the Dresdner Kreuzschule. Geyer died when Wagner was only eight years old, but he had already inspired a taste for art in the boy. Under the influence of Goethe and Shakespeare he wrote the tragedy "Leubald und Adelaide" at a very young age. He started a series of diaries around the age of twenty, already convinced of his own genius and his future fame. After attending performances of works by Weber and Beethoven he switched to music. He went to Leipzig university in 1831 and became chorus master at the Würzburg theatre. Wagner finished his first opera "Die Feen" in 1834 and in 1836 he married the singer Minna Planer (a marriage he would regret until their separation in 1858). He went to Königsberg with her to became musical director at the theatre. Soon afterwards the theatre went bankrupt and Wagner was left behind without payment. An engagement in Riga followed, but in 1839 he had to flee from his creditors. Wagner tried to find himself a place in the world of opera in Paris (1839-1842). Allthough he became friendly with the great Meyerbeer he failed and almost starved to death from poverty. Even so he finished his opera "Rienzi" and when it was performed in Dresden on October 20th, 1842 it became an immediate success. In 1843 it was followed by "Der Fliegende Hollander" (The Flying Dutchman) and in that same year he became Kapellmeister in Dresden.

He influenced almost everyone but i is sometimes difficult to separate his music from his ideas and the admiration he inspired in people like Hitler. Wagner wrote his own librettos and composed operas that admirers claim are the ultimate opera experience and detractors say are overblown. He began creating operas in 1832 and his musical genius quickly became evident with and Lohengrin . As his ideas about unified music drama developed, he turned to pre-Christian Teutonic myth and wrote the longest and most complex work in opera, the Ring Cycle , which consists of four connected operas, and Wagner thought so highly of them he built his own opera house in Bayreuth to stage them and his last opera Parsifal was meant to be presented nowhere else. Wagner's life has inspired numerous film biographies since the early days of cinema and he also features prominently in films about his patron King Ludwig II. Among those who have impersonated him on screen are Richard Burton, Trevor Howard and Alan Badel. His music is often used for atmospheric effect in non-operatic films including such classics as L'Age d'Or Dracula and Apocalypse Now.

Viaggia a Vienna e Praga e, nel 1833 viene eletto maestro di coro e sostituto al teatro di Würzburg, passa quindi a Magdeburgo e Königsberg dove sposò l'attrice Minna Planner. Nel frattempo scrive le opere Le Fate (1834) e Il divieto d'amare (1836) e alcuni pezzi orchestrali. Nel 1837 è maestro di cappella del teatro di Riga. E' a Riga che compone il Rienzi (terminato nel 1840). Nel 1839 è a Londra e Parigi dove compone L'Olandese Volante (o Vascello Fantasma) ed entra in contatto con l'ambiente musicale francese ed in particolare con Hector Berlioz. Nel 1842 ritorna in Germania anche grazie alla maggior considerazione che la propria musica stava riscuotendo in patria. Dal 1843 al 1849 è maestro di cappella alla corte di Dresda. Das hat ihn aber nicht gehindert, im Parsifal und im Ring der Nibelungen die Vorstellung von Raum und Zeit der Physik des zwanzigsten Jahrhunderts vorausahnend auszudrücken. Wagner also hätte Einsteins Raumzeit antizipieren können? Wer jetzt schon ungläubig diese These Hans Melderis samt seinem Buch beiseite legt, ist ein Opfer Descartes' geworden wie schon Wagner in seiner leichten Aversion gegen die Naturwissenschaft. Wer Wagner erfahren will, muss erst an René Descartes leiden. An seiner Trennung der Welt in einen "mechanistisch-toten und einen seelisch-lebendigen Teil", wie Melderis es ausdrückt. Er wird heulen bei Descartes' Satz: "Auf unserer Suche nach dem unmittelbaren Weg zur Wahrheit sollten wir uns nicht mit Dingen abgeben, über die wir keine mit den Beweisen der Arithmetik und Geometrie vergleichbare Gewissheit erlangen können." Denn sind diese Dinge so klar voneinander zu trennen? Die Materie vom Geist, oder von der Kunst? Natürlich nicht. Wer sich nicht einfach so auf den schönen Gedanken einlassen kann, dass das Gesamtkunstwerk Wagners eine Wiedergeburt der Einheit von Mythos und Wissenschaft, von Musik und Mathematik wie bei Pythagoras ist, der bekommt von Melderis gute Gründe dafür. Diesen Gedanken des Physikers Werner Heisenberg etwa: "Wissenschaft und Kunst bilden im Laufe der Jahrhunderte eine menschliche Sprache, in der wir über die entfernteren Teile der Wirklichkeit sprechen können; und die zsuammenhängenden Begriffssysteme sind ebenso wie die verschiedenen Kunststile gewissermaßen nur verschiedene Worte oder Wortgruppen in dieser Sprache." Der Urknall ist wie der Schöpfergott eine Erzählung, eine Erzählung, die allein schon als Schaffensakt an sich den kosmogonischen Akt wiederholt.
