Webern - alongside Beethoven, Schoenberg, Satie and Mahler -
is secure in my "Top-10 Composers" list [if one needs any such lists].
He communicated more distilled, powerful and intimate emotions, balance and art
in minutes [of music] then so many others fail to create in lifetimes.
His compositions are like a halo of being,
and while one doesn't listen to them daily,
once absorbed - they support existence forever.

    Biography
    Anton von Webern
Composer Austria Born 3 Dec 1883
    Died 15 Sep 1945
Webern took up music seriously from an early age. He spent the years 1908-20 learning to conduct from practical experience in operettas and light music. His friendship with Alban Berg, a co-disciple of the innovator Arnold Schoenberg, led to the formation of the Second Viennese School whose work was vital to the future of atonal music.
Anton von Webern's name is closely associated with that of Schoenberg in formulating and propagating the serial technique of composing. Webern's only truly Romantic work is the Idyll for large orchestra, composed in 1908 but not performed until 1962. Even here, a deep concentration on the value of almost each note shows in its 20 variations on a straightforward theme. Otherwise, his output displays a great variety of compositions faithfully reflecting Schoenberg's teaching. He has his followers today in Pierre Boulez, Karlheinz Stockhausen and some jazz composers.
Anton von Webern was born in Vienna, grew up in Graz and moved to Klagenfurt when he was 11, taking piano and cello lessons there. Every summer was spent in collecting and tabulating local plants and minerals on the family's Carinthian estate at Preglhof. However, despite his keen curiosity with nature, his acknowledged desire was to become a trained musician, and he began to compose in the conventional manner.

He conducted theater orchestras in Prague and in various German cities until 1918, devoting himself thereafter to composition and teaching. His first composition, a passacaglia for orchestra (1908), which showed the postromantic influence of Mahler, gave no hint of the exclusive use of the twelve-tone technique (see atonality ) of Schoenberg that was to characterize the rest of his output. In his relatively few works, mostly for small chamber combinations or for voice, he reduced music to its barest essentials, depriving it of traditional harmonic concepts. He concentrated many fragmented musical events, ordered by intricate contrapuntal, rhythmic, and dynamic patterns, into extremely contracted time spans. For example, the whole of Five Pieces for Orchestra Variations (1940) for orchestra, he strove for total variation, the opposite of traditional developmental technique. His individual style was both poetic and intensely expressive, and his music has become increasingly influential, although it remains outside the popular taste. Webern was accidentally killed by a sentry during the American occupation of Germany.
