He conducted theater orchestras in Prague and in various German cities until 1918, devoting himself thereafter to composition and teaching. His first composition, a passacaglia for orchestra (1908), which showed the postromantic influence of Mahler, gave no hint of the exclusive use of the 12-tone technique (see atonality ) of Schoenberg that was to characterize the rest of his output. In his relatively few works, mostly for small chamber combinations or for voice, he reduced music to its barest essentials, depriving it of traditional harmonic concepts. He concentrated many fragmented musical events, ordered by intricate contrapuntal, rhythmic, and dynamic patterns, into extremely contracted time spans. For example, the whole of Five Pieces for Orchestra (1911-13) contains only 76 measures. In later works, such as Variations (1940) for orchestra, he strove for total variation, the opposite of traditional developmental technique. His individual style was both poetic and intensely expressive, and his music has become increasingly influential, although it remains outside the popular taste. Webern was accidentally killed by a sentry during the American occupation of Germany.

Home Page Anton von Webern Life He studied at Vienna University under Adler (1902-6), taking the doctorate for work on Heinrich Isaac ; in composition he was one of Schönberg 's first pupils (1904-8), along with Berg Like Berg, he developed rapidly under Schönberg's guidance, achieving a fusion of Brahms Reger and tonal Schönberg in his orchestral Passacaglia, already highly characteristic in its modest dynamic level and its brevity. But he was closer than Berg in following Schönberg into atonality, even choosing verses by the same poet, Stefan George, to take the step in songs of 1908-9. His other step was into a conducting career, which he began with modest provincial engagements before World War I. He was born Anton von Webern but dropped the von in 1918. Webern was born in Vienna in Austria. After spending much of his youth in Graz and Klagenfurt, Webern attended Vienna University from 1902. There he studied musicology with Guido Adler, writing his thesis on the Choralis Constantinus of Heinrich Isaac. This interest in early music would greatly influence his compositional technique in later years. He studied composition under Arnold Schoenberg , writing his Passacaglia, Op. 1 as his graduation piece in 1908. He met Alban Berg , who was also a pupil of Schoenberg 's, and these two relationships would be the most important in his life in shaping his own musical direction. After graduating, he took a series of conducting posts at theatres in Ischl, Teplitz, Danzig, Stettin, and Prague before moving back to Vienna. There he helped to run Schoenberg 's Society for Private Musical Performances and conducted the Vienna Workers Symphony Orchestra from 1922 to 1934.

Anton von WEBERN Compositeur autrichien, qui contribua au développement du dodécaphonisme introduit par Arnold Schoenberg et influença toute une génération de compositeurs au lendemain de la Seconde Guerre mondiale. Né à Vienne, Webern étudia auprès du musicologue autrichien Guido Adler à l'université de Vienne. Ensuite, à partir de 1904, il prit des cours particuliers avec Schoenberg. De 1908 à 1934, il mena une carrière de chef d'orchestre à Prague, à Vienne et dans plusieurs villes allemandes, tout en enseignant la composition à l'Académie de musique fondée par Schoenberg à Vienne, où il présentait les œuvres des musiciens contemporains novateurs. Sa carrière fut brutalement interrompue par la montée du nazisme : après l'assassinat de Dollfuss, en 1934, il fut contraint de vivre de travaux d'édition. En 1945, il s'installa à Salzbourg, où il fut tué accidentellement par un soldat américain le 13 septembre 1945.
