LOST IN THE STARS Purchase The Cast Album Sheet Music MAXWELL ANDERSON Music by KURT WEILL Originally Staged by ROUBEN MAMOULIAN Based on ALAN PATON'S novel Cry, the Beloved Country First produced at the Music Box Theatre on October 20, 1949, with Todd Duncan as "Stephen Kumalo", Inez Matthews as "Irina" and Julian Mayfield as "Absalom". A LAN Paton's moving novel of racial conflicts in South Africa, Cry, the Beloved Country , was the source of Lost in the Stars . At the hands of Maxwell Anderson and Kurt Weill, the musical play became a work not only of surpassing compassion and humanity and a promise of man's brotherhood but also a work of such impressive artistic dimension that there have been some American critics who prefer to identify it not as a "musical play" but as an opera. Indeed, on several occasions Lost in the Stars has been successfully performed by American opera companies. Weill consigned some of the most eloquent music of his score to the chorus, which occasionally occupies a unique role as a kind of commentator-interpreter.

März 1900 in Dessau geboren. Während des ersten Weltkriegs war er als Aushilfskorrepetitor am Dessauer Theater beschäftigt, der dortige Kapellmeister Albert Bing gab ihm ersten Theorie- und Kompositionsunterricht. Kurz vor Ende des Krieges ging Weill nach Berlin, nahm ein Musikstudium an der Berliner Hochschule für Musik auf und wurde Schüler Engelbert Humperdincks. Nach einer kurzen Dirigententätigkeit in Lüdenscheid setzte er das Studium ab 1921 in Feruccio Busonis Meisterklasse für Komposition fort. Nebenbei leitete er Synagogenchöre, gab privaten Kompositionsunterricht und verfasste musikalische Beiträge für die Zeitschrift "Der deutsche Rundfunk". Um 1925 hatte sich Weill neben Paul Hindemith und Ernst Krenek als einer der führenden Komponisten seiner Generation durchgesetzt. In dieser Zeit wendete er sich dem Musiktheater zu. Mit dem Einakter Der Protagonist (1926), in dem Weill Jazzelemente und klassische Formen miteinander verbindet, errang er einen ersten Erfolg als Opernkomponist. Weill had emigrated from Germany only a few years earlier, after achieving success as a theatre composer in his homeland with 'Die Dreigroschenoper (The Threepenny Opera)', 'Happy End', 'Aufsteig' and 'Fall der Stadt Mahogonny (Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny)', and many other works. Under Adolf Hitler's Nazi regime the Jewish-born Weill fled from Germany; he settled briefly in Paris, then in England, moving to the United States in 1935. His first staged work in his adopted homeland was the anti-war musical 'Johnny Johnson' (1936). Weill convinced Maxwell Anderson (What Price Glory?, Mary of Scotland, Winterset) to write the libretto and lyrics for 'Knickerbocker Holiday'. But the deeper influence of Stravinsky , coupled with an increased consciousness of music as a social force, led Weill to a rediscovery in the mid-l920s of tonal and vernacular elements, notably from Jazz , in his cantata Der neue Orpheus and one-act stage piece Royal Palace, written between two collaborations with the expressionist playwright Georg Kaiser: Der Protagonist and Der Zar lässt sich photographieren. In 1926 he married the singer Lotte Lenya, who was to be the finest interpreter of his music. His next collaborator was Brecht , with whom he worked on The Threepenny Opera The Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny (1929) and Happy End (1929), all of which use the corrupted, enfeebled diatonicism of commercial music as a weapon of social criticism, though paradoxically they have beome the epitome of the pre-war culture they sought to despise.
