Biography
Kurt Weill
Composer Germany Born 2 Mar 1900
Died 3 Apr 1950
Kurt Weill was born into a religious Jewish family in Dessau, Germany and had a musical childhood before beginning his career while in his 20s. As an established young composer in Germany he had his first opera 'The Protagonist' with Georg Kaiser performed in April 1926. This was the same year he married Lotte Lenya, who stayed within him throughout his life, although they did divorce in 1933, remarrying in 1937.
Weill decided to devote himself to the musical theatre, and his works with Bertolt Brecht soon made him famous all over Europe. To escape the new Nazi leadership in March 1933, Weill fled first to Paris (1933-35), then to the US, where he lived and worked until his death. Common themes that run throughout his career are a concern for social justice, an aggressive pursuit of respected playwrights and lyricists as collaborators and the ability to adapt to audience tastes.
Some of Weill's most important works include the Violin Concerto in 1925, 'The Threepenny Opera' with Bertolt Brecht in 1928, 'Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny' with Brecht in 1930, 'The Pledge' with Caspar Neher in 1932, 'The Seven Deadly Sins' with Brecht in 1933, 'Lady in the Dark with Moss Hart and Ira Gershwin in 1941, 'Street Scene' with Elmer Rice and Langston Hughes in 1947, 'Lost in the Stars' with Maxwell Anderson in 1949.

Weill, Kurt , German-American composer, b. Dessau, studied with Humperdinck and Busoni in Berlin. He first became known with the production of two short, satirical, surrealist operas, Der Protagonist (1926) and [the czar has himself photographed] (1928). More popular than these, however, was his melodious Dreigroschenoper (1928), a modern version of John Gay's Beggar's Opera, with book by Bertolt Brecht . Translated and adapted by Marc Blitzstein as The Threepenny Opera, it was first produced in New York City in 1933; revived in 1954, it ran for more than six years and has become one of the classics of the musical stage. Brecht was also the librettist of Weill's satiric opera Aufstieg und Fall der Stadt Mahagonny [rise and fall of the city Mahagonny] (1927; revised 1930). All these works were condemned as decadent by the rising followers of Hitler, and, in 1933, Weill left Germany for France. In 1935 he emigrated to the United States, where he began writing sophisticated musicals, the most notable being Johnny Johnson Knickerbocker Holiday (1938; written with Maxwell Anderson)

Born March 2, 1900, in Dessau, Weill studied with the composers Ferruccio Busoni and Engelbert Humperdinck. With the German poet-dramatist Bertolt Brecht he created a new form of musical theater in two satiric-didactic, musically brilliant works, both of which won international acclaim: Die Dreigroschenoper (1928; Eng. production, The Threepenny Opera, 1954), a modern paraphrase of The Beggar's Opera (1728) by the British writer John Gay; and Aufsteig und Fall der Stadt Mahagonny (1929; Eng. production, Mahagonny, 1970). Weill's works were banned as subversive in Germany, and he went with his wife, the actor Lotte Lenya (1898-1981), first to Paris (1933-35) and then to the U.S. (1935). For the Broadway musical theater he composed Knickerbocker Holiday Lady in the Dark (1941), and
