This disc features four substantial orchestral works by John Woolrich: The Barber's Timepiece , inspired by a short story by Italo Calvino; the Oboe Concerto, featuring Nicholas Daniel; The Ghost in the Machine , which explores the idea of order sliding into chaos; and the Viola Concerto, which is structured as a cycle of 'songs without words', alluding to Tristan , Mozart's Idomeneo and Cosi fan tutte , Beethoven's An die ferne Geliebte , and madrigals by Monteverdi.

Vic Hoyland BBC Symphony Orchestra/ Martyn Brabbins, conductor
Vic Hoyland's energetic and forceful work, In transit (1987), pitches massive orchestral forces against each other through its three evolving sections. The central mood of the work has been described by the composer as "a joy in generating energy - making numbers dance". The joint inspirations for Vixen (1997) are Hoyland's earlier work Fox , the 11th-century Persian philosopher Ibn-Sina (known in Europe as Avicenna), and the intricate geometric architecture of the Centre for the Arab World in Paris. This wide-ranging work for large orchestra contrasts the dark and sensuous orchestral textures of Mahler with exotically Messiaenic percussion.

10. Judith Kellock - In The Press
Music Festival of the Hamptons Martha Sheehan, East Hampton Star —On King Harald'sSaga by Judith weir judith Weir's King Harald's Saga was described in
http://www.judithkellock.com/press.html
Judith Kellock displayed amazing talents as a dramatic reader and a singer of rare intelligence and vocal splendor. Everything but... Barber's Hermit Songs means the rest of his substantial published output for voice and piano, and the impulse behind this is absolutely right because it focuses our attention on the less familiar but equally important songs that span the composer's career. Judith Kellock has a voice of genuine quality. Her soprano is easeful in alt, as in the unaccompanied passage near the end of Nuvoletta , yet has amplitude below. Her somewhat elegiac tone naturally suits a number of these songs, and she finds additional intensity for James Joyce's I hear an army and Robert Graves' Despite and Still . Xak Bjerken is in equal command of the liquid pianism and the more outward virtuosity... The recording balances bloom and clarity... It features singing and playing of distinction.
Stephen Pruslin, International Record Review
She brought the characters to life with the skill and cool command of a great actress, and she sang the difficult vocal pieces with a voice of indescribable beauty.

JUDITH WEIR - 1954 ENGLAND - STRING QUARTET, ISCM 1992
Judith Weir
Judith Weir was born in 1954. Whilst at school in London, she studied composition with John Tavener and played in the National Youth Orchestra. From 1973-76 she was a music student at King's College, Cambridge, where her composition teacher was Robin Holloway. In 1975 she attended the summer school at Tanglewood, where she studied with Gunther Schuller.
She taught in the New Music Department at Glasgow University and held a creative arts fellowship at Trinity College, Cambridge. Since 1995 she has been Fairbairn Composer in Association with the city of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra.
Judith Weir received the 1994 Critics' Circle Music Section Award for the most outstanding contribution to British musical life. She was made a Commander of the British Empire in 1995.
Heaven Ablaze in His Breast, for two pianos, 1989, ISCM 1998 Manchester Heaven Ablaze in His Breast is a collaboration between Judith Weir (composition) and Ian Spink (choreography) The extremity of E.T.A. Hoffmann's literary world was my first musical cue for this version of The Sandman. The presence of singers acting in this piece may suggest that it is an opera, but the singers rarely sing 'in character'. More often their music is simply part of the overall fabric of a scene, an adjunct to the visual impression. From time to time, however, an outbreak of Opera is unavoidable.
In the spirit of Hoffmann's fascination with the shattered personality we have used the idea of Doppelgangers or 'doubles' for four of the characters.

She believes the role of composer is to create wider musical communities, hence her music fuses folk traditions from diverse sources, with a strong narrative quality. Natural History
World Premiere: 14 January 1999
Orchestration: S; 3(pic+afl)333/4301/timp.2perc/hp/str
Text: Chang-Tzu, from The Inner Chapters, trans. from the Chinese by A.C. Graham
Language: English
Duration: 17'
Dawn Upshaw, soprano
Boston Symphony Orchestra; Sir Simon Rattle, conductor
Symphony Hall, Boston
Commissioned by the Boston Symphony Orchestra Composer Note: Natural History is a setting, for soprano and large orchestra, of four brief texts taken from Chuang-tzu, a classic collection of Taoist writings from the 4th, 3rd and 2nd centuries BC. The oldest of these writings are known as The Inner Chapters, ascribed to Chuang-Tzu himself; and it is from this section of the work that all the texts of Natural History have been selected. My interest in Chinese philosophical literature began in my teens, and was directly inspired by my enthusiasm for the writings of John Cage, in which ancient Chinese ideas are frequently connected to musical models. The texts of Natural History (which I have considerably compressed, from the translation by A.C.Graham) are typical of the qualities I most enjoy amongst this literature; concision, clarity, lightness and (hidden) wisdom. All four texts are short parables about natural life as lived by different species, human and animal; a Taoist Carnival of the Animals, in fact. I am well aware that my own interpretations of these ancient wisdoms may be idiosyncratic, and spring from an avowedly Western sensibility. But nevertheless, these are ideas with which, in my own way, I have long been familiar; and I have for some time considered Taoism to be the most helpful of established philosophies in the conduct of modern life.
