Session 23 Recent Women Composers 2: Values and the Canon
Sofia Gubaidulina at 65: The Great Composer In the Totalitarian State and After
Vera Lukomsky, University of California, San Diego
"How to become a contemporary woman? These days, in order to be contemporary, a woman must look as a girl, dress up like a boy, think like a man, and work like a horse!" (A Soviet Anecdote) Sofia Gubaidulina is recognized as one of the most original and powerful Russian composers of the late twentieth century. She first came to attention during the era of 'Glasnost' as a kind of a composer-dissident. The Soviet regime had long been hostile to her music; until 1990 most of her works were not performed in Russia. Initial recognition was given her in the West in early 1980s, starting from Gidon Kremer's premier of her "Offertorium". Since then, she has achieved a world success, which seems to be unusual for a woman composer. Now her music is considered in Russia as the inspiring source of spirituality, which is extremely important for the post-Soviet society. In my view, Gubaidulina's music is so successful because it projects the striking structure of her personality, where feminine qualities of mind blend with the qualities traditionally considered as masculine. I believe that Jungian theories, particularly those found in works such as Aspects of the Masculine, might be effectively applied to Gubaidulina, who loves and regularly cites Jung's works. In this paper, I will discuss Gubaidulina's philosophic and scholarly interests, aesthetic views and compositional methods in the terms of masculine-feminine oppositions. The sources for this discussion are my personal impressions from recent meetings with the composer, the content of our interviews, and my experience with her music.
