He was himself a teacher for nearly thirty years at the University of Chicago; not that there is anything remotely academic or didactic about these two strongly characterised and powerfully argued concertos. As Bernard Jacobson’s notes judiciously aver Wernick’s music fuses technical expertise and a highly personalised use of tonal and near tonal elements. Structurally individual as well, Wernick’s concertos resist confident critical judgement. He belongs to no convenient "school" and his often rough hewn and angular music is full of the most impressive sonorities and conjunctions.

46. Richard III (Page 2)
While richard was alive, before the Tudors took power, John Rous styledrichard as a mighty prince and especially good lord (wernick 84).
http://www.dickiethon.com/~manetheren/richard/richard2.html
On July 6, 1483, Richard Duke of Glouchester, became King Richard III. This occurred only after Edward IV's sons were found to be illegitimate, and he was asked to assume the throne by both the house of Commons and the house of Lords. As king, Richard "meant to make his rule personal, accessible, and paternal" as he had done while he was Duke of Gloucester (Kendall 372). Richard tried to "maintain the strong central government his brother had created, and yet to make it parochial in its sensitivity to local issues and grievances while it remained national in its final authority" (373). Not all Tudor sources are so obviously biased. Bernard Andre was commissioned by Henry VII to write The Life of Henry VII. Andre, However, makes no mention of many of the murders later attributed to Richard, including Queen Anne's the Duke of Clarence's, and Prince Edward of Lancaster's (Kendall 497). Only a few of the Tudor portrayals of Richard accuse him in the death's of his nephew's Edward V, and Richard Duke of York, better known today as the Princes in the Tower. These historical and literary portraits may or may not be factual or accurate. Many times, a writer writes what is politically correct and not the truth. The writer Carmeliano wrote two versions of Richard's life. During Richard's lifetime Carmeliano attempted to canonize Richard. however, after Richard's death he was one of the first to write of Richard as being a "murderous tyrant" (Pollard 184).

47. Richard III
. richard was at Edward IV's side through exile, poverty, triumph, and richesalways true to his motto Loyalty binds me (Weir 30, wernick 90).
http://www.dickiethon.com/~manetheren/richard/richard1.html
The Wars of the Roses, a civil war between the noble houses of Lancaster and York, had been ongoing since the death of Richard II in 1399. The War of the Roses ultimately came to an end with the death of yet another Richard, Richard III, at the battle of Bosworth Field on August 22, 1485. Richard was cut down by followers of the Lancastrian Pretender, Henry Tudor. Thus, Richard became the last English Monarch to die in battle. Richard III is one of the most misunderstood people in history, but by examining the way he is historically portrayed and his actions as a man and ruler, students of history can hope to gain a better understanding of him. To understand Richard the Third, and understanding of the world in which he lived is necessary. This much maligned king of England was born Richard Plantagenet October 2, 1452, at Fotheringhay Castle. He was the fourth and youngest son of the Richard Duke of York (Kendall 27). The fact that the fourth son of a noble should rise to the throne shows the turbulence of the times in which Richard lived. "Richard was . . . the child of a violent age, born to a legacy of civil war. His childhood was overshadowed by battles, treachery, and violent death. His brother and father were killed in battle when he was eight" (Weir 29). Richard was the product of an extremely hostile environment. Thus, it would become more understandable if he became ruthless to survive and rule in a violent world. Richard has been accused of many crimes that he probably did not commit. However, he probably was responsible for the murder of the Princes in the Tower. "In medieval England deposed kings [even babyish and uncrowned] were as good as dead" (Wernick 90). It was standard practice for a monarch to kill those that have a strong claim to the throne to make themselves more secure on the throne.
