Seldom can a two-word title have encapsulated a wider-ranging content. The whole of romantic Germany is here, from landscape-painting to simple and not-so-simple love, from deep religious feeling to ancient folk-legends of elves and the like. Here is the whole of romantic Germany, it must be said, less the simple love of melody, for which we have to turn to Brahms. There is no denying that Wolf is "difficult", requiring repeated hearings in order to appreciate the subtlety of his word-painting both in the voice-part and the accompaniment; the more so if your knowledge of German is limited. At the end this music can lodge itself in the memory, it

Introduction (born Slovenj Gradec, 13 March 1860; died Vienna, 22 February 1903). He played the violin, piano and organ as a child and studied briefly at the Vienna Conservatory (1875-7, meeting his idol Wagner ) but, lacking discipline and direction, he had to rely on friends and cultured benefactors for help and introductions. His first important works, the songs of 1877-8, arose from the effects of his sexual initiation and first romantic attachment. Some are bright, others agonized, reflecting his depression and illness from a syphilitic infection. Though in 1880 this cloud seemed to abate, a pattern of cyclic mood swing and sporadic creativity was already established. Holidays, studies of Wagner and radiant song settings alternated with personal estrangements and a dark dramatic strain in his music. For three years (1884-6), he wrote trenchant musical criticism for the Wiener Salonblatt , siding with Wagner and against Brahms , meanwhile working on Penthesilea Schubert and Schumann . His acclaimed public performances won new converts, and in February 1889 he finished the 51 songs of the Goethe songbook, in April 1890 the 44 Spanish songs. Publication and critical recognition turned his thoughts to opera but from 1891 physical exhaustion and depressive phases stemmed the flow of original music. In 1895 he composed his only completed opera

WOLF, HUGO
WOLF, HUGO (1860-1903), German composer, was born on the I3th of March 1860 at Windischgraz in Styria. His father, who was in the leather trade, was a keen musician. From him Hugo learned the rudiments of the piano and the violin. After an unhappy school life, in which he showed little aptitude for anything but music, he went in 1875 to the Conservatoire. He appears to have learned very little there, and was dismissed in 1877 because of a practical joke in the form of a threatening WOLF, JOSEPH (1820-1899), Anglo-German artist, the son of a German farmer, was born in 1820 at Miinstermaifeld, on the river Moselle, in the Rhine Province. In his boyhood he was an assiduous student cf bird and animal life, and showed a remarkable capacity as a draughtsman of natural history subjects. His powers were first recognized by Professor Schlegel of the Leiden museum, who gave him employment as an illustrator. In 1848 he settled in London, where he remained till his death on the 2oth of April 1899. He made many drawings for the Zoological Society, and a very large number of illustrations for books on natural history and on travel in various countries; but he also won a considerable success as a painter. See A. H. Palmer, The Life of Joseph Wolf (London, 1895).
