Charles Wuorinen was born in New York City on 9 June 1938. He began composing at age five, and by his twelfth year he was sure of his career path as a composer. He attended the Trinity School in Manhattan, and upon graduation he enrolled in Columbia University. In his teens Wuorinen attracted early attention, winning a New York Philharmonic Young Composers' Award as early as 1954. Since then Wuorinen has been awarded numerous prizes, including the 1970 Pulitzer Prize in Music for his electronic work Time's Enconium . In 1985 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Letters. A brilliant pianist and formidable conductor, Wuorinen founded the Group for Contemporary Music in 1962, while still a graduate student. He has been much in demand as a performer - in the mid-1980's he organised and conducted a series of concerts entitled "New and Unusual Music" with the San Francisco Symphony. Major works include: a full-length comic opera The W. of Babylon , the thirty-two minute electronic work Time's Enconium , a series of three ballets for the New York City Ballet entitled The Dante Trilogy (inspired by the Divine Comedy), and four works written during Wuorinen's stint as composer-in-residence with the San Francisco Symphony -

CHARLES WUORINEN Already a brilliant pianist and formidable conductor, Wuorinen cofounded the Group for Contemporary Music, while still a graduate student, in 1962. With his colleagues, Harvey Sollberger and Nicolas Roussakis, Wuorinen presided over an organization which quickly established a new standard for the performance of the most challenging music of its time. Chamber Concerto for Cello and Ten Players (1963) is the most traditionally conceived of the group, casting the soloist in a familiar virtuoso role. Throughout its five movements, the cellist projects sharply-etched ideas, negotiating daring leaps that span registral extremes. As a virtual mirror image, the Chamber Concerto for Flute and Ten Players Simple Composition. Awards during these years included an American Academy of Arts and Letters Citation (1967), a Guggenheim Fellowship (1968), the Brandeis Creative Arts Award (1970), and finally, the Pulitzer Prize in Music (1970) for his thirty-two minute electronic work, Reliquary for Igor Stravinsky (1975), premiered at the Ojai Festival in California in 1975.

New! - see Charles Wuorinen's own home page More information Charles Wuorinen (b. 9 June 1938, New York City) - has been composing since he was five and has been a forceful presence on the American musical scene for more than four decades. In 1970, Wuorinen became the youngest composer to win the Pulitzer Prize in music with Time's Encomium , an electronic composition written on commission from Nonesuch Records. The Pulitzer and the MacArthur Fellowship are just two among many awards, fellowships and other honors to have come his way. Wuorinen has written more than 200 compositions to date. His newest works include Symphony Seven commissioned by four American orchestras, a trilogy of orchestral scores for the New York City Ballet a Piano Quintet for Ursula Oppens, and a Percussion Quartet . He is presently at work on an opera based on a novel of Salman Rushdie with the poet James Fenton and the director Mark Lamos. An indication of Wuorinen's historical importance can be seen in the fact that in 1975 Stravinsky's widow gave Wuorinen the composer's last sketches for use in A Reliquary for Igor Stravinsky . Wuorinen was the first composer commissioned by the Cleveland Orchestra under Christoph von Dohnanyi ( Movers and Shakers ); and likewise the first to compose for Michael Tilson Thomas' New World Symphony (

Spanning over three decades, Epithalamium presents New York born Wuorinen at his radical best, pushing the limits of instrumental and electronic music. Expressly chosen for this exclusive Tzadik release by longtime Wuorinen fan John Zorn, the pieces here include the electronic composition Time's Encomium, (winner of the Pulitzer Prize in 1970); from the '80s: New York Notes, which brilliantly blends electronic tape with acoustic instruments; and two masterful miniatures from the '90s: Epithalamium for two trumpets and Lepton for harp, celeste and piano. All recordings were done under the supervision of Mr. Wuorinen himself, and have been remastered for exclusive release on Tzadik." Previous Page Index of Artists Next Page
