Has Winning the Pulitzer Made a Difference? Charles Wuorinen
Winner of the 1970 Pulitzer Prize in Music

http://www.stokar.com/wuorinen.htm

Charles Wuorinen
Photo by Bob Adler, courtesy C. F. Peters Corp. t's hard to tell what the Pulitzer meant to my career. The only direct result of receiving the prize that I'm aware of came in the form of a modest commission for a string quartet from the Fine Arts Quartet , who (I believe) had formed the habit of requesting a new work from each year's winner. Otherwise, who can say? It's very hard to hypothesize about what life would have been like without the Pulitzer, but as I look over the list of winners I am struck by how many of them have faded into invisibility; it's tempting to think that the composers who have not disappeared would have stayed visible (and audible) without the prize. Then there are those who might have received the award but didn't. In the case of the Nobel Prize for Literature , for example, the list of authors who were passed over is stunning: Dostoevsky Proust Joyce There's a lesson here.

November 2, 2002; Cooper Union: Steve Reich and Charles Wuorinen
An unusual short evening of music (less than 75 minutes) took place at the beautiful Cooper Union hall where Lincoln and Douglas held one of their famous debates. Unfortunately the beauty of the site is not matched by the beauty of its acoustics since microphones and speakers were required to allow the string quartet to be heard. The program consisted of Wuorinen's Third String Quartet (1987) and Reich's Different Train The Reich was very different. The loudspeakers were required since the live string quartet adds texture to a recorded string quartet which "lays down the time line" of the work. On that recording are snippets of conversation of several people who are reminiscing about trains and the holocaust. The gimmick here is that the snippets of conversation have been notated by Reich as if they were sung, thus producing little snippets of musical themes which are endlessly repeated by the strings and create much of the musical fabric. The other portion of the musical fabric is an intensely rhythmic driving "locomotive train" sound complete with harsh whistles. It is loads of fun to listen to at the start which celebrates the great era of trains as transportation for people in the first half of the 20th century. The music becomes predictably dark as the recorded interview snippets turn to the death camps and the trains seen in another light. When it was over I felt as if I had experienced something but it was less a musical thing than a dramatic thing. The recording could not help but bring up the question, why is the live string quartet needed? The voices were impossible to understand without staring at the text (fortunately provided) and the quality of those recorded voices was poor with very noticeable tape hiss when they were used. Are we forever tied to those recorded voices or could actors be used in the future to provide them in, perhaps, a truly live performance? The musical use of those voices (which reminded me of Janácek's use of music to mimic the Czech language) seemed more a gimmick than an inspired musical decision. Consequently I left with very mixed feelings about a work which is undeniably intriguing.

On Charles Wuorinen
I did three years of coursework and teaching assistantships at UB. Most of that time I studied with Mr Wuorinen. There were some at Buffalo who described his personality as thorny; from my own experience with Mr Wuorinen in the studio, I understand this to mean simply A) that he holds his opinions strongly and supports them well, and B) that some people who have contrary opinions, and can’t support them near as well, find this aspect of him ‘thorny.’ He is an accomplished musician, a fine teacher of the craft he has mastered, and – what is exceedingly rare among American composers these days – an artistic practitioner of that craft. Musicians who do me the honor of reading my music, often observe that my music does not greatly resemble that of Mr Wuorinen. I learned a great deal from Charles’ studio, and part of that was what I learned from him; part was what I learned of myself. At another time, I learned a great deal from the music of Beethoven; my music resembles Beethoven’s as little as it does Wuorinen’s. It is possible that Charles would not approve of all of the music I write – I know that he often had criticism of what I brought to his studio, and that his criticism was almost always good. At the last, though, I can live with anyone else’s disapproval, occasional or enduring; but no artist can live without his own approval. I cannot answer for anyone else’s experience. In the studio, Mr Wuorinen treated me with unfailing respect, and sometimes showed warm approval. And I have always felt that this reflected more to his credit than to mine.
