Xenakis, Yannis (1922– ), Greek composer known for his use of mathematical ideas in music. Born in Braila, Romania, and reared in Greece, where he studied engineering, he studied in Paris with the French composers Arthur Honegger, Darius Milhaud, and Olivier Messiaen and was assistant to the French architect Le Corbusier in 1948–60. Xenakis’s philosophy of "stochastic music" is based on mathematical concepts such as set theory, symbolic logic, and probability theory, with a goal of stochos, or evolution to a stable state. His most famous work, Metastasis (1955), provided a model for Le Corbusier’s Philips Pavilion at the 1958 World’s Fair in Brussels.

Intussen studeerde hij compositie bij Honegger, Milhaud en Messiaen en in Gravesano bij Scherchen. Diepgaande kritiek op de seriële muziek bracht hem in 1955 tot zijn stochastische muziek. Adorno's artikel Vers une musique informelle (1961) beantwoordde hij in 1963 met Musiques formelles (uitgebr. Eng. vert. 1971), waartegen op zijn beurt Boulez opponeerde. In 1967 ontwierp hij het Franse paviljoen Polytope op de Wereldtentoonstelling te Montreal, een combinatie van structuren in licht en geluid. In 1978 maakte hij voor het Centre Pompidou in Parijs de Diatope, een 40 m lange en 20 m hoge tent, met daarin eveneens een combinatie van visuele en akoestische elementen, een schouw- en hoorspel van 45 minuten. Ancient Music is practically lost, although there are a few fragments surviving (we know the ancient notation, which involoves alphabet-symbols). The byzantine hymns are still sung in churches everywhere in Greece and the study of byzantine notation, theory and musicology is a very strong domain in Musicological departments at Universities. The greeks created a lovely folk music during the ottoman occupation. Its follow-up is the refugees' music, the Rebetika and people's music of contemporary times, with composers who never had 'western music' education. It is still very much alive alongside pop, rock, ballads and all kinds of international influences.
