Thank you for this informative article. John Rockwell may well have been

I knew La Monte in Berkeley forty years ago, along with Terry Riley; we
were known in the Cal music department as the Terrible Trio. At that stage
many of their (sometimes our) events arose spontaneously from
circumstances; to identify a composer would have been as impossible and
irrelevant as to name the auteur of a Gothic cathedral. (Not to place them
on the same plane.) La Monte might ask me to scrape a chair on the floor, but he did not specificy when, where, or how to scrape it; I could be as creatively "original" as I liked. It was a "happening", or "conceptual"

FLUXUS
An extensive amount of material has been written about FLUXUS in recent years and a Web site is also available. The history of this movement has several alternate versions, which include a group of New York art students in the fifties experimenting with chance techniques and resurrecting the past traditions of such experiments. Many of them were involved with John Cage's Experimental Music Class held The New School for Social Research in Greenwich Village 1958-1960. Besides the students, Cage also invited performance poets and artists who were doing work which he found interesting to participate in the classes. Such people as Jackson MacLow, George Brecht, Toshi Ichiyanagi, Al Hanson, and Allen Kaprow were invited. Many of them continued the course at composer's Richard Maxfield's house as an electronic music course after Cage ended the course. La Monte Young came to New York from California to enroll in it as part of his graduate studies. Also, Terry Riley, Terry Jennings, and Dennis Johnson participated in the course, and together the originated what they then called 'static music' which eventually became known as minimal music Polymath poet/composer/theorist/ playwright Dick Higgins has said of early FLUXUS: The principle ideas we came to share, mainly through Cage, were derived from Zen Buddhism, the I Ching, Erik Satie, and Marcel Duchamp... Many also favored the 'time structure' or 'temporal collage' method of composing musical and other temporal artworks, such as poems, plays, dances, happenings, and simultaneities.

Ladies and gentlemen, forget about floating in space. We are floating in dreams dreams woven of sustained overtones, duration and pitch playing tricks on our ears and distorting our sense of time and place. It began with this, funny enough. Lou Reed's infamous Metal Machine Music ; Jim O'Rourke's unlikely entrance in the pantheon of indie rock; all those SYR EPs and Sonic Youth's rectum-suffocated worship of the avant-garde; these instances and countless others were all born from the same seed: the legend of the Theatre of Eternal Music, La Monte Young's Dream Syndicate. One of the most significant and controversial releases of 1965, Inside the Dream Syndicate offers a glimpse behind the mysterious curtain. It's what you might have heard had you been fortunate and bold enough to sit in on one of the Dream Syndicate's legendary '60s performances. Mind-numbing waves of amplified strings, slowly bowed to maintain overlapping drones the likes of which you never thought you'd ever want to listen to alienating, enveloping sound, seemingly devoid of notation and sense. "Outrageous!" was the cry when Lou Reed unleashed

come organisation la monte young LA MONTE YOUNG Studied clarinet and saxophone (1951-4) with William Green, counterpoint and composition with Leonard Stein (1955-6) and electronic music with Richard Maxfield (1960-1). In 1959 he studied with Stockhausen where he became familiar with John Cage's work. In 1970 he began studying the Kirana style of classical Indian vocal music. In 1962 he founded the Theater of eternal Music for the performances of his own compositions. He was music editor of S.M.S. and edited An Anthology which contained his compositions, essays, poetry and mixed media works. His better known works are: COMPOSITION NO. 2 which tells the performer to build a fire in front of an audience. COMPOSITION NO. 5 releasing butterflies into the audience COMPOSITION 1961 NOS. 1-29 which instruct the performer to draw a straight line and follow it. Poem for table, chairs and benches etc (1959). His later works are systems of frequencies which can be performed from performance to performance, in theory this performance can last for thousands of years. Drones produced vocally, instrumentally and electronically are dominant in these later pieces.

If that is too simplistic, the reader may consult the opening chapter in Blueprint for a Higher Civilization Brend narrows the frame to a self's valuing. It's an open question whether brend can be interpersonal. Not only would you have to apprehend "the other" out-of-role; their enjoyment would not supply the definition for you. (Watching from afar, or overhearing, could be the basis.) It would be phenomenologically stranger than brend, because the whole point of being-in-society is to apprehend people as willful and thematic. In Walter DeMaria's loft on Bond Street, NYC. La Monte Young, "Lecture 1960." It is also instructive to consult Robert Morris' unpublished complete first submission to An Anthology , ed. La Monte Young; and Robert Morris' letters to La Monte Young. (La Monte Young archive.) A conversation of mine with Richard Maxfield after my February 1961 concerts, at which Simone Forti was present, was also significant. I thought that my elder peers were saying that socialization as such was a bad thing. There was a screaming incongruity between Young's demand for newness and his adamant adherence to the label `music'.
