Anna Ekka provided much background information for this and the original article issued with the LP.

YPSILANTI
YSTAD, a seaport of Sweden on the S. Baltic coast, in the district (liin) of Malmohus, 39 m. E.S.E. of Malmo by rail. Pop. (1900) 9862. Two of its churches date from the I3th century. Its artificial harbour, which admits vessels drawing 19 ft., is freer from ice in winter than any other Swedish Baltic port. Apart from a growing import trade in coal and machinery, YPSILANTI (CITY)—YUCATAN its commerce has declined; but it is among the first twelve manufacturing places in Sweden, having large mechanical workshops. YTTERBIUM (NEo-YTTERBIUM) [symbol, Yb; atomic weight, 172-0 (O = i6)], a metallic chemical element belonging to the rare earth group. Mixed with scandium it was discovered by Marignac in gadolinite in 1878 (see RARE EARTHS). The oxide, Yb2O3, is white and forms colourless salts; the crystallized chloride, YbQs-GHjO, forms colourless, deliquescent crystals; the anhydrous chloride sublimes on heating (C. Matignon, Ann. chim. phys., 1906 (8), 8, p. 440). In 1907 G. Urbain separated ytterbium into two new elements, neo-ytterbium and lutecium (atomic weight, 174-0); and in 1908 C. A. von Welsbach published the same result, naming his elements aldebaranium and cassiopeium (on the question of priority see F. Wenzel, Zeit. anorg. Chem., 1909, 64, p. 119). YUCATAN, a peninsula of Central America forming the S.E. extremity of the republic of Mexico and including the states of Campeche and Yucatan and the territory of Quintana Roo. Small parts of British Honduras and Guatemala are also included in it. The natural boundary of the peninsula on the S. is formed in part by the ridges extending across N. Guatemala, the line terminating E. at the lower part of Chetumal Bay, and W. at Laguna de Terminos. From this base the land extends N. between the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean Sea in nearly rectangular form for about 280 m., with about the same extreme width in longitude. It has a mean breadth of about 200 m., a coast-line of 700 m. and an area of about 55,400 sq.m.

Cent Wallons du siècle

Institut Jules Destrée,
Charleroi, 1995
Index

In case you're wondering what the hell this is for, it's a spacer. Otherwise the whole stretchy table thing doesn't work.
Y is for Ysaye.
Eugene Ysaye - violinist, conductor and composer - was born in Liege in 1858. He became the most famous violinist of his generation particularly in the French speaking world. In this century, the violinists who revered his memory included Kreisler, Thibaud and Enesco. The first winner of the Concours International Eugene Ysaye, initiated in Brussels in his memory in 1937, was David Oistrakh.
Ysaye's playing was described as magisterial, full-blooded and titanic although he could be lyrical and poetic when required. His most famous disciple in terms of sonority was Fritz Kreisler who always proclaimed him as the greatest of all violinists. Following his tours of USA as a violinist he acquired a tenure as conductor of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra in 1918 and achieved fame in this new role. This was probably more because he had become afflicted with trembling hands which affected his phenomenal technique rather than a particular desire to start a new career. His third career was as a composer in a post-romantic style although with a twentieth century technique. As a result, his violin sonatas have been seen by violinists as a test of skill and virtuosity and almost all of the great violinists of this century have played them.
On disc, the six sonatas Opus 27 are admirably played by Lydia Mordkovich (Chandops CHAN 8599). Dedicated to various famous violinists like Szigeti, Kreisler, Thibaud and Enescu , they reflect the strongly defined character of the playing of the various dedicatees. All students of violin playing and technique should listen to them.
