The Contemporary Classical Music Weekly About Us Essential Library Music Festivals Resources Composer Links This Week's Spotlight Hans Werner Henze

Hans Werner Henze turns 75 on July 1 and the celebrations have been particularly intense in London: eight big concerts at South Bank, a revival of 'Boulevard Solitude' at Covent Garden and many subsidiary events spread over almost a month, involving the BBC Symphony, the Philharmonia, the London Sinfonietta, several smaller ensembles and numerous distinguished soloists. The variety of the programs have been equal to Henze's extraordinary range. His musical style is diverse, displaying a respect for classical forms such as the sonata and a lyricism that reveals his knowledge of Italian opera. His many works include The Raft of the Medusa (1968) (a requiem for Che Guevara), the opera The English Cat (1982), seven symphonies, and ballet and chamber music. Henze's art is always theatrical, yet his work embraces all the major symphonic genres, ballet and chamber music as well. An innate sense of dramatic structure gives equal power and dynamism to his music whether written for stage or for the concert hall. In his personal recreation of Baroque, classical and contemporary values Henze is one of the most emblematic artists of our time; and in his prodigious creativity, one of the leading figures of 20th century music.

The work is recorded on the LEONARDA Label (LE 343) with notes by Leonarda's Marnie Hall. The song texts for Part II and III of THE MAGIC WORLD are included here followed by excerpts from the CD notes. II
I unwind my song like a string of jade jewels,
I unwind my song like a string of precious jewels,
I see my song unwinging in a thousand directions,
like a string of precious stones

        once more before I sleep.
      Dancing firefly, wandering firefly
        give me light, light

A Brief Bio of the Composer Judith Lang Zaimont is an internationally-recognized composer whose music is characterized by its expressive strength, dynamism, and rhythmic vitality. Her musical language is coloristic, employing a chromatic, almost centrifugal tonality which shrewdly balances the lyric and dramatic. In both instrumental and vocal works her distinctive style successfully captures emotion by creating vivid, flexible rhythms and sculpted lines within clearly defined forms. Return to the
