Her works have been programmed at Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall, and other major auditoriums on three continents by such groups as Connecticut Opera, Philadelphia Orchestra, Czech Radio Orchestra (Prague), Baltimore Symphony, and many others. Zaimont is also creator and editor-in-chief of the critically acclaimed book series, The Musical Woman: An International Perspective (3 vols., Greenwood Press). She is currently professor of music at the University of Minnesota School of Music. You have called composing an "undescribable art." What do you mean by that? JLZ: The act of composing is akin to ‘wrestling with an angel’. It’s an experience in living time-out-of-time; an experience of extraordinary and heightened consciousness where most awareness of the outer world disappears: I forget to eat, pay no attention to the passage of time, and am completely absorbed in the task at hand. There is no filter of ‘personality’ present, no need for ‘politesse’ or the distractions of sociability it is utterly and truly one mind engaged with the matter. This prestigious list of 100 works by 100 Twentieth Century composers from around the world was compiled by Frank J. Oteri to identify "the vital music of this century" and to stimulate radio broadcasts of music of our time. Selected for its structural ingenuity and virtuosic writing for both instruments, Doubles is characterized by Oteri as "a piece that shows off how beautiful the sound of an oboe is!" Only 50 works on the list are by American composers, and only 20 of these are living Americans. In addition to Ms. Zaimont, the distinguished roster of current composers named to "The Century List" also includes Michael Torke, Ellen Taaffe Zwilich, Charles Wuorinen and Philip Glass. Minneapolis-based Ms. Zaimont is the only Minnesota composer to receive this accolade. "The Century List" is described as "100 Reasons to Play This Century's Music" in the magazine's feature article. Mr. Oteri, a music writer, commentator and staff member of the American Music Center in New York, originally prepared "The Century List" for presentation at the 1998 annual meeting of American Personnel in Public Radio. He intends the list to serve as a means of integrating this vital music into the regular broadcasting rotation of radio stations around the country.
