Jan Dismas Zelenka For most of his career, the Czech baroque composer J.D. Zelenka acted as a substitute for the court conductors J. Heinichen and later J.A. Hasse in one of the most significant musical centres of the first half of the eighteenth century - Dresden. Here Zelenka was confronted with the great blossoming of Italian music. Its influence, enriched by remarkable melodic and harmonic overtures, is reflected in his Baroque style, which considerably expanded the tonal concepts of the time. Because of his open-minded architecture and bound polyphony he is often said to resemble J.S. Bach. Most of his works originated in Dresden. Among them, for example, are Missa sanctissimae trinitatis, Zalmy, Lamentace etc. His instrumental works are also extensive (sonatas for various instruments, cavalry preludes, concert symphonies, etc.). Introduction
Jan Dismas Zelenka's music exhibits contrapuntal mastery and harmonic inventiveness, qualities that were particularly admired by his contemporaries J.S.Bach and G.P.Telemann. His music which was not widely disseminated during his lifetime due to the protected status that compositions by the Dresden composers held, has in recent years seen a revival of interest, mainly centred upon his vocal compositions, which is surely warranted on the basis of the originality of his language, "the private rhetoric of the heart" which Dr Wolfgang Horn refers to.
Biography
Jan Dismas Zelenka was born in Lounovice, a small town in central Bohemia, (now Czechoslovakia) south east of Prague, and was baptised on the 16 th Following his early education with his father it is assumed that he studied in Prague at the Clementinum. Zelenka maintained a long association with the Clementinum which possessed a Jesuit college and university and was a renowned centre for music. In 1704 Zelenka wrote the school drama in honour of Count Cernin Via laureata magnis virtutum (now lost). At the Clementinum, church music, school dramas with accompanying music, and Easter oratorios called sepolcra ( after the symbolic grave at which they were played ) were performed. Sepulchrum oratorios were particularly popular in the Bohemian lands and Zelenka's

After a few years in Venice (1717-19) he returned to Dresden, where he stayed for the rest of his life; in 1735 he became Kirchen-compositeur. His compositions include Masses, oratorios, cantatas, motets, other sacred vocal works, six trio sonatas, and various orchestral works. Zelenka is a greatly under-appreciated composer.

15. Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) About Jan Dismas Zelenka
Jan Dismas Zelenka, baroque composer born Lounovice 1679, died Dresden 1745.

Jan Dismas Zelenka, baroque composer:
born Lounovice 1679, died Dresden 1745.
Q.
Why did Zelenka's music disappear into obscurity for 200 years? A. This discussed at length in Janice Stockigt's book . After Zelenka's death, much of his music was "kept under lock and key" by the Dresden court, and the reasons for this are not clear. Telemann is known to have written of ZWV 55 Responsoria ) being guarded jealously "as something very rare". Copies of certain works (which had presumably been given away while Zelenka was alive) were made after his death and ended up in different parts of Germany and Czechoslovakia. There were even a few performances in the 1800s. Perhaps one of the strongest reasons for the obscurity of Zelenka's music was that Catholic liturgical music had no place in a Lutheran society.
Q. How many composers of his time did Zelenka actually meet? A. Perhaps it is more relevant to ask which composers he didn't meet! Between 1716 and 1719, he studied under Fux in Vienna and had Quantz as his student. Zelenka would also have met Antonio

Zelenka, Jan Dismas (1679 - 1745)
The Bohemian composer Jan Dismas Zelenka played the double bass in the royal orchestra in Dresden, whence he was despatched for study in Italy, eventually returning to spend the rest of his life in the Saxon capital. It was expected that he would succeed Heinichen as court Kapellmeister, but the position went, instead, to Hasse, and Zelenka remained, now as Church Composer, a position of much less importance. He won the admiration of distinguished contemporaries, such as Johann Sebastian Bach, for his use of counterpoint, his harmonic imagination and originality, and made some use of Bohemian folk elements. Orchestral Music Zelenka's orchestral compositions include a set of five Capriccios, among other compositions in the musical idiom of his time. Vocal and Choral Music Much of Zelenka's surviving work is in the form of sacred vocal music, settings of the Mass or of movements from the Mass, of psalms and of canticles.
