Endnotes Zelenka's six Trio Sonatas (Z181) are amongst the most extraordinary chamber music works of the 18th-century, and are undoubtedly the most challenging pieces written for Baroque double reed instruments. More than any contemporary works, they struggle from their trio-sonata strait-jacket. Sonata V is a hybrid trio sonata-triple concerto modeled on the Italian three-movement plan, complete with tutti ritornelli and solo passages in the opening movement. All the sonatas are "larger than life" and display the virtuosity of composer and performer alike. Despite the larger number of his sacred and instrumental works composed for the court of the Saxon Electors and Polish Kings in Dresden where he was employed as bassist and composer, Zelenka's music has only recently attracted the interest of the 20th century musicians and public. During his lifetime, his work was appreciated only by a select audience (including Telemann and J.S. Bach). This was due in part to the Electors' restrictions on the printing of works by musicians in their employ. Although he was given the title of Kirchenkomponist in 1735 (a year before J.S. Bach received the same title), his requests for reimbursement for expenses in court activities remained ignored.

A Bohemian composer and virtuoso violone (double-bass) player, he spent most of his professional life as violone player and Kapellmeister in Dresden at the court of Augustus the Strong, Elector of Saxony and King of Poland. As a composer, Zelenka had a late startaround age 40and only limited success. While he wrote many religious works, the court did not allow their publication, probably in order to retain its exclusive rights. He wrote only a few instrumental works, of which these trio sonatas, probably composed in 1721-22, are the primary example. Trio sonatas were a staple of Baroque composers, and mostly served as genteel background music for dinners and aristocratic chatter. But like those of his contemporary, J.S. Bach, most of Zelenka's six definitely do not fit this bill. They frequently use Bohemian folk rhythms, are complex, and are often very aggressive with large dynamic leaps and technically challengingto say nothing of the unusual instrument soloist combination of two oboes (oboe and violin in No. 4) and bassoon with bass accompaniment. Five follow the traditional four-movement style and pattern (slow-fast-slow-fast), but No. 5, a three-movement work modeled after the Italian concerto grosso, is a wild exception and will make your ears perk upthis piece alone is worth the set. This CD set features Heinz Holliger and Maurice Bourgue, oboes; Thomas Zehetmair, violin; Klaus Thunemann, bassoon; Klaus Stoll, double bass; Jonathan Rubin, lute; and Christiane Jaccottet, harpsichord.

His music is tuneful, refreshing, challenging, and ultimately very satisfying. In 1697, the King-Elector Augustus the Strong of Saxony had assumed the Polish crown, a step that obliged him to adopt the Roman Catholic faith although Saxony was predominantly Lutheran. Thus the Royal Court at Dresden maintained two religious sides, on the one hand remaining of necessity within a Lutheran context, yet putting up a respectable Catholic "face". Zelenka, born in Bohemia and Jesuit-educated, was in an admirable position to take charge of the Catholic church's musical requirement in Dresden, for which he would eventually provide some 150 sacred compositions. His instrumental works, on the other hand, are far fewer, numbering only some fifteen. Our present selection offers a very typical cross-section. Remaining for further exploration are the six Capriccios, and the remaining five of the six trio sonatas.
