    29. C Programming Course
c programming course. (ie, try to solve the example c programming tasks givenin lectures). The only way to learn a programming language is to practice!
    http://www.phys.unsw.edu.au/~mcba/c001.html
    C programming course
A short lecture course for staff and students of the School of Physics, UNSW. Suggestions for improvements are welcomed. A note to random people who find this on the Web: this "course" was never meant to be more than a thumbnail introduction to C to supplement some informal lectures written in a hurry to try and give our graduate students (who mostly know FORTRAN) some knowledge of C. It is not superbly written, and the HTML leaves a lot to be desired. At the time (1994) there wasn't much available on the Web, hopefully some decent C courses have appeared by now. I hope that you find something useful here. Sometime I may get a chance to improve it... Wednesdays, 4pm, in Room 112. Written by Michael Ashley.
Why would you want to learn C rather than FORTRAN?
  • C is the most widely used programming language.
  • Even though FORTRAN is still in heavy use by Physicists, it is debatable whether it is dominant.
  • If you want to get a computer-related job outside the field of Physics, you really need to know C.
  • C is the first language ported to any new computer architecture. In fact, FORTRAN compilers often emit C code!

      Introduction
Everyone knows about buffer overflows nowadays. Everyone knows some ways to prevent them. But most people still do it in a way that requires them to be unnecessarily careful while coding - even a single carelessly written part of code can be a security disaster. None of these ideas I've written about is new, but most of them are very rarely used with C programs. I think it's mostly because many people don't know about them or just haven't realized how they could be easily used. Sure, there are also people who will never change their way of coding. And there's also the problem that using non-libc functions make the program bigger, which is pretty annoying with otherwise very small programs. Besides not only making your code more resistant to buffer overflows, I think many of these features will actually make writing C-code a lot easier and more fun.
