Welcome To The Macintosh Battery Web Page! Gratuitous Opinion If you have the chance to take a bunch of computers apart - by various manufacturers, you get an appreciation for the care that goes into their designs. Or lack thereof! One thing that you have to appreciate is the simplicity of maintenance of many of the Apple computers - many of them have front and/or rear panels (often called bezels in the trade) that pop right off and reveal slides that allow drives and logic boards to come out easily. Replacing a hard drive is very easy in many Macs such as the Quadra 630 or the All-In-Ones (such as the LC 5200). Getting access to the logic board is also simple in the Quadra 605 and similar "slab" models. Many Macs came with ahead-of-their-time components such as the CD drive in the MacTV and subsequent similar models. Logic board design is normally very good but does not always show the same thought - as you can see by looking at Low End Mac and reading their very well written section on Road Apples. Many of the circuit boards were made with severe compromises and limitations - too few PCI slots, too conservative clock speeds, etc. But then you get the cutting edge computers such as the 2fx! If you look at many of the logic boards you can see that they were designed for operations at various speeds, options that never were implemented, etc. Some very smart designers worked on some models and it would have been neat if they had been turned loose to create more masterpieces. And of course the software has frequently been sublime - thanks Jef Raskin for popularizing the idea that computers should be built around people and not electronics!
