Imagery is a powerful visual aid and serves as a source of derivative information such as planimetrics and classification schemes to derive such information as land use or vegetation. If your GIS covers a particularly large area, aerial imagery may not be a practical or economical choice. Satellite imagery is often the preferred choice of imagery for larger regions. More and more choices of satellite imagery are becoming available and the cost associated with its purchase is dropping. Listed here are some of the most prominent sources of currently available satellite imagery and future satellite launches. This guide is meant to be a launching point for searching for and acquiring information about available satellite imagery. Individual choice of imagery will depends on many factors such as resolution, image type and cost. Many of the imagery can be purchased directly from the associated agencies. In addition, there are online sites that also specialize in satellite imagery sales.

Introduction
Geographic information systems (GIS) are computer-based systems used to store, display, and analyze geographically referenced data, i.e. data identified according to their locations. GIS are also defined as computer-based mapping and information systems that enable the user to analyze geographic data in a variety of ways. GIS have a wide variety of applications for public works, planning and permitting, public safety, and other local government activities.

About This Document
A Beginner's Guide to Geographic Information Systems came about as a joint project between myself and Mike Creech as part of our respective Directed Field Experiences, in the Engineering Library and the Map Library, here at the University of Michigan. Originally, we were going to put together a guide to GIS resources on the Internet. As we began to view the existing net resources, we realized that there were already many indexes to GIS internet resources. However, there were very few, if any, documents that actually took the time to explain in detail the basics of GIS. Most of the existing resources give only brief definitions. Our goal with this page is to provide a more thorough explanation of the fundamental concepts of geographic information systems to the GIS novice. The guide will also provide some of the best internet examples that we have found representing government, academic and commercial GIS activity. In addition, we will also list some of the most comprehensive and useful guides that we have found for further information on this rapidly expanding field.
