The objective of the AEMN is to collect reliable weather information for agricultural and environmental applications. Each station monitors air temperature, relative humidity, rainfall, solar radiation, wind speed, wind direction, soil temperature at 2, 4, and 8 inch depths, atmospheric pressure, and soil moisture every 1 second. Data are summarized at 15 minute intervals and at midnight a daily summary is calculated. A microcomputer at the Georgia Experiment Station initiates telephone calls to each station periodically and downloads the recorded data. The data are processed immediately and disseminated via the world wide web ( www.Georgiaweather.net ). Click on a site below to obtain local weather and related information. The Environmental Monitoring and Assessment Program (EMAP) is a research program to develop the tools necessary to monitor and assess the status and trends of national ecological resources. EMAP's goal is to develop the scientific understanding for translating environmental monitoring data from multiple spatial and temporal scales into assessments of current ecological condition and forecasts of future risks to our natural resources. EMAP aims to advance the science of ecological monitoring and ecological risk assessment, guide national monitoring with improved scientific understanding of ecosystem integrity and dynamics, and demonstrate multi-agency monitoring through large regional projects. EMAP develops indicators to monitor the condition of ecological resources. EMAP also investigates designs that address the acquisition, aggregation, and analysis of multiscale and multitier data. EMPACT has met its intended goals. Having met the program's goals, the Environmental Monitoring for Public Access and Community Tracking (EMPACT) Program ended in 2001. EMPACT grants are no longer available. EMPACT has met its goal of helping communities bring people up-to-date local environmental information they can understand and use in making daily decisions about protecting their health and environment. People in over 160 communities in 39 States now have current and accurate information about environmental conditions in their communities. Many of the valuable lessons learned from EMPACT are accessible on this Website through the EMPACT Technology Transfer Handbooks and resource documents, as well as from the EMPACT projects that are continuing to provide their communities with valuable local environmental information. Many of the EMPACT projects are working with other communities with similar local environmental monitoring needs.

The Group for Environmental Monitoring [GEM] is a non-profit environmental Trust, implementing programmes in the field of sustainable development and environmental justice through:
  • research capacity building networking lobbying and policy advocacy
GEM's work was initiated in 1991 in response to needs felt in the run up to the Rio Summit - that environment cannot be understood outside a relationship with socio-economic development, especially in a country with limited resources and large inequity in sharing those resources. It's special contribution has been its ability to bring together communities and policy makers to ensure that people's needs are addressed, thereby promoting implementation of sustainable development principles. Generally speaking, environmental monitoring can be defined as checking the state of the environment and studying trends and effects. Our activities should describe the state of the environment in such a way that it can be a useful tool in environmental work. Environmental monitoring is one of several instruments used for follow-up and development. We monitor the environment in order to assess whether the resources that are being utilised to prevent and limit negative environmental impact are having the best possible effect. A prerequisite for this is the use of rational methods of priority allocation which are primarily based on environmental quality goals, dispersion estimates and assessment criteria. These have in turn been developed from previous environmental monitoring data. Environmental monitoring should also act as proof that the environmental work that is being done has a positive effect on the environment. Our activities include long-term studies that are repeated at regular intervals. These studies follow the state, trends, effects and processes in the environment. Environmental monitoring, which is state-financed, works both on a national and a regional level.
