The objective of the AEMN is to collect reliable weather information for agricultural and environmental applications. Each station monitors air temperature, relative humidity, rainfall, solar radiation, wind speed, wind direction, soil temperature at 2, 4, and 8 inch depths, atmospheric pressure, and soil moisture every 1 second. Data are summarized at 15 minute intervals and at midnight a daily summary is calculated. Our activities should describe the state of the environment in such a way that it can be a useful tool in environmental work. Environmental monitoring is one of several instruments used for follow-up and development. We monitor the environment in order to assess whether the resources that are being utilised to prevent and limit negative environmental impact are having the best possible effect. A prerequisite for this is the use of rational methods of priority allocation which are primarily based on environmental quality goals, dispersion estimates and assessment criteria. These have in turn been developed from previous environmental monitoring data. Environmental monitoring should also act as proof that the environmental work that is being done has a positive effect on the environment.
