Background Information
Environmental problems are of particular interest and concern to many students and teachers. In this activity, students research a local water pollution issue first hand, while in the field. They experience the problem directly and use the scientific method to better understand the impact of pollutants on the local flora and fauna. After identifying the problem, possible solutions are brainstormed by the students. Notes for the Teacher:
This activity was tailored for a specific site high in the mountains, and required the use of mountain bikes for access. Though this approach may not work for you in your area, I encourage you to try to add some adventure into an outdoor science lab or field trip. The students will appreciate it and appreciate the science involved. Water quality monitoring is not only important to the general public, but it lends itself to getting science classes out into the field. Once outside of the school building, adventure abounds.

Fact Sheet on Environmental Monitoring
Background
The discharge of radioactive effluents from routine nuclear power plant operations can have environmental impactson man, animals, plants, and sea life. During the licensing of a nuclear plant, NRC issues a Final Environmental Statement (FES) which identifies these potential impacts. As part of NRC's requirements for operating a nuclear power plant, licensees must:
  • keep releases of radioactive material to unrestricted areas during normal operation as low as reasonably achievable (as described in the Commission's regulations in 10 CFR Part 50.36a), and comply with radiation dose limits for the public (10 CFR Part 20).
In addition, NRC regulations require licensees to have various effluent and environmental monitoring programs to ensure that the impacts from plant operations are minimized. The permitted effluent releases result in very small doses to members of the public living around nuclear power plants.
Regulations
Current regulations to limit offsite releases and their associated radiation doses are much more restrictive than those required for nuclear power plants licensed in the 1960s. In 1975, the NRC amended its regulations (in 10 CFR Parts 50.34 and 50.36 and a new Appendix I) to provide numerical guides for design objectives and limiting conditions for operation to meet the radiation dose criterion "as low as is reasonably achievable." Adoption of these regulations requires that plant releases be kept to doses well below the radiation exposure limits for the public in 10 CFR Part 20.

Landfill Environmental Monitoring
The Waste Management program has collected environmental monitoring data from landfills since the mid-1970s. Our staff use this information to evaluate whether individual landfills are performing as designed and whether or not they are impacting the environment. Environmental monitoring data submitted to the program are also used to evaluate the effectiveness of remedial actions taken at landfills with known problems. We receive and review a wide variety of types of environmental monitoring data from over 600 landfills, including the results from analysis of groundwater, air and leachate samples, methane gas readings and water table measurements. In 1979, the Waste Management program developed a database to capture the huge volume of data submitted by facilities. This database is called the Groundwater and Environmental Monitoring System (GEMS). GEMS is an interactive tool used by DNR staff to provide a better picture of landfills in Wisconsin. Staff can view and analyze GEMS data in a variety of ways by working with over twenty different reports. A long-term goal is to provide direct public access to the environmental monitoring data contained on GEMS. The GEMS database today is a result of facilities, consultants and laboratories working with the DNR to make sure samples are collected and analyzed properly and the resulting data is transferred to DNR in an accurate manner. We will use this forum to provide you with changes related to environmental monitoring for the Waste Management program. We have developed a

Idaho Environmental Monitoring Program (IEMP)
Introduction
In the late 1940's, the predecessor to the U. S. Department of Energy ( DOE ) selected an isolated U. S. Navy weapons test range in the Upper Snake River Plain of Idaho as the site for a nuclear research facility. The mission of the National Reactor Testing Station (NRTS) was to develop peaceful applications of nuclear energy. On December 20, 1951, the world's first nuclear power plant, Experimental Breeder Reactor I (EBR-I), became fully operational at the NRTS. This facility earned its place in scientific history as the first reactor to generate useable electricity from atomic power. Over the years, more than fifty nuclear reactors were constructed and used at this site which is now known as the Idaho National Engineering and Environmental Laboratory ( INEEL The predecessor to NOAA 's Air Resources Laboratory ( ARL ) Field Research Division ( FRD ) was created in 1949 to support the NRTS by developing a basic understanding of the meteorology and climatology in this complex terrain setting. The primary focus was placed on protecting the health and safety of workers and nearby residents through the use of meteorological measurements and the development of transport and dispersion models. For example, one of the first studies examined how local meteorology affected iodine deposition and subsequent uptake into the food chain. To that end, a small network of monitoring stations was deployed to acquire meteorological data for the Upper Snake River Plain. Over the years, additional stations were added to this mesonet to enhance understanding of various meteorological regimes.

Environment and Human Settlements Division "ENVIRONMENT FOR EUROPE" PROCESS ENVIRONMENTAL PROGRAMME FOR EUROPE The Programme Priority Activities Environmental Monitoring Consumption Patterns ... Environment for Europe Environmental Monitoring The EPE stressed the need to coordinate environmental data collection and assessment, and to ensure compatibility of data and reporting standards. It called, furthermore, for the promotion of the participation of all European countries, particularly countries in transition, in the work of the European Environment Agency (EEA) in order to make comparable, harmonize and coordinate existing data collection and processing systems, as well as to provide the necessary information for the next pan-European state-of-the-environment reports. The Ministers at Aarhus recognized that mechanisms for coordinated monitoring, data collection, processing and management in the European region were still inadequate. They agreed to give high priority to improving these mechanisms as well as the state of environmental information to support decision-making and to improve the availability of reliable environmental information to the public. The Ministers welcomed the initiative of the Russian Federation to convene a special meeting in Moscow to strengthening the cooperation in this field.

Van Emon Exposure Assessment Research Division Environmental Monitoring Systems Laboratory Las Vegas, Nevada 89193-3478 ENVIRONMENTAL MONITORING SYSTEMS LABORATORY-LAS VEGAS OFFICE OF RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT U.S. ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION AGENCY LAS VEGAS, NEVADA 89193-3478 NOTICE The information in this document has been funded in part by the United States Environmental Protection Agency through its Office of Research and Development under assistance agreement #CR819047-01 to the Department of Entomology, University of California at Davis. It has been subject to the Agency's peer and administrative review, and it has been approved for publication as an EPA document. Mention of trade names or commercial products does not constitute endorsement or recommendation for use. ABSTRACT Immunochemical methods for the analysis of environmental contaminants are relatively new on the analytical chemistry scene. These methods are based on the use of a specific antibody as a detector for the analyte of interest. Immunoassays are rapid, sensitive, and selective, and are generally cost effective for large sample loads. They have been applied to diverse chemical structures (i.e. triazines, sulfonylureas, organophosphates, polychlorinated biphenyls, cyclodienes) and are adaptable to field use. These characteristics make immunochemical analysis a valuable tool for use by the environmental analytical chemist. This document is designed to facilitate the transfer of this valuable technology to the environmental analytical chemistry laboratory. Field personnel who may need to employ a measurement technology at a monitoring site may also find this manual helpful.
