ANA recommends treatment from a medical team with substantial acoustic neuroma experience.
Purposes of The Acoustic Neuroma Association The Acoustic Neuroma Association provides information and support to patients who have been diagnosed with or experienced an acoustic neuroma or other benign problem affecting the cranial nerves. Patient founded in 1981, ANA is an incorporated, non-profit organization, recognized as such by the IRS, and is supported by contributions from its members. The association also furnishes information on patient rehabilitation to physicians and health care personnel, promotes research on acoustic neuroma, and educates the public regarding symptoms suggestive of acoustic neuroma, thus promoting early diagnosis and successful treatment.
Benefits of Membership in ANA
The Acoustic Neuroma Association creates and publishes a quarterly newsletter, distributes patient information booklets, presents a biennial national symposium, provides access to a network of local support groups, compiles a Registry of statistical data on acoustic neuroma treatment, and maintains this Home Page on the Internet for patient information and discussion.

What is the Acoustic Neuroma Association of Canada?
The Acoustic Neuroma Association of Canada is a patient-headed, peer support group. It is an incorporated, registered, non-profit organization recognized as such by Revenue Canada.
Many individuals who face and undergo removal of acoustic neuromas and other benign tumors involving the cranial nerves have questions, concerns and physical and emotional adjustments. 2) It is usually slow growing and expands at its site of origin.
3) The most common first symptom is hearing loss in the tumor ear only.
4) The cause is unknown.
5) A large tumor pushes on the surface of the brain but does not grow into the brain tissue.
6) Continued tumor growth can be life threatening.
7) The treatment options are observation, surgical removal or radiation.
What is an Acoustic Neuroma?
An acoustic neuroma (sometimes termed a neurolemmoma or schwannoma) is a benign (non-cancerous) tissue growth that arises on the eighth cranial nerve leading from the brain to the inner ear. This nerve has two distinct parts, one part associated with transmitting sound and the other sending balance information to the brain from the inner ear. These pathways, along with the facial nerve, lie adjacent to each other as they pass through a bony canal called the internal auditory canal. This canal is approximately 2 cm (0.8 inches) long and it is here that acoustic neuromas originate from the sheath surrounding the eighth nerve. The facial nerve provides motion of the muscles of facial expression.

http://www.ANarchive.org Welcome to our informational web site, dedicated to providing newly diagnosed Acoustic Neuroma (Vestibular Schwannoma) patients with information to help evaluate their treatment options and to make an informed decision. Acoustic Neuroma (a.k.a. Vestibular Schwannoma) is a double-edged sword On the one hand , the expected outcome from Acoustic Neuroma treatment really depends on the choice of treatment and the experience of the team. The outcomes range from permanent disability to no complications whatsoever. A good outcome is never guaranteed; all we Acoustic Neuroma patients can do is try to increase our odds by choosing our treatment from an informed viewpoint. On the other hand , there really are NO Acoustic Neuroma specialists that can give you accurate up-to-date information for all options. You must see the provider of each type of treatment separately, have each one give you their statistics and their expectations for your outcome, then make up your mind yourself.

About "One Ear to the Ground".
This website aims to provide general and self help information for acoustic neuroma patients including some of the less frequent and 'lower profile' difficulties faced by acoustic neuroma patients after treatment and to assist the British Acoustic Neuroma Association in promoting a British perspective on acoustic neuroma. This web site came into being some years ago when there was little useful information available to patients (mainly those who had undergone surgery) to help recovery and rehabilitation. That situation has improved and there is an abundance of information available to the patient, largely due to the Internet. The quality of outcomes is better - no doubt owing much to enhanced imaging techniques and greater awareness of acoustic neuroma leading to earlier diagnosis. Enhanced surgical procedures, excellence of surgical skills and technological progress contribute to better outcomes which in turn often translate into a better quality of life for today's post operative patient. Despite the improvement in outcomes, it appears that there are still some patients who derive benefit from this web site - it will therefore continue for the time being.

My Acoustic Neuroma Experience This is the story of my diagnosis and treatment of acoustic neuroma.  I decided to provide a detailed diary of my experience and decisions as an aid to others with this condition.  Perhaps I got a little carried away with the detail, but I wanted to be sure I didn't leave anything out. I'm an engineer, not a doctor, and any statements or opinons on this website regarding treatment are only my opinion as an AN patient, nothing more.  My quotes of some the various people I spoke with about my condition are limited by the accuracy of my memory. My stated opinions of each of these people is based on my limited personal experience with them, and my opinion might improve or decline if I knew them better. 2002 UPDATE! For those who are wondering where I am two years after treatment, I'm still at Boeing and am now working on the new Sonic Cruiser!

The decisions related to treatment for the acoustic neuromas depend upon the complete understanding of the competing risks vs. benefits for the different treatments. Options for treatment for the acoustic neuromas may include surgery or radiosurgery . The FSR (fractionated stereotactic radiosurgery) for acoustic neuromas is an important option for treatment. The important considerations for treatments of the acoustic neuromas include the size and rate of growth of the acoustic neuroma as well as the progression of any symptoms (hearing, balance, ringing (

acoustic neuromas (vestibular schwannomas) treatment options discussed including surgery, gamma knife radiosurgery and fractionated radiotherapy. Statistics, links and reference list provided.
http://www.acousticneuroma.neurosurgery.pitt.edu
Please see: A Survey of Neurosurgeons' Preferences: Radiosurgery, Resection or Observation for Patient's with Acoustic Neuromas The primary clinical issues include avoiding tumor-related or treatment-related mortality, prevention of further tumor-related neurologic disability, minimizing treatment risks such as spinal fluid leakage, infections, or cardiopulmonary complications, maintaining regional cranial nerve function (facial, trigeminal, cochlear, and glossopharyngeal/vagal), avoiding hydrocephalus (obstruction of spinal fluid), maintaining quality of life and employment, and reducing cost. All treatment choices should strive to meet all of these goals. Making the Diagnosis
Most patients present with hearing loss or imbalance and have an audiogram performed. This may show that the cause of the hearing problem is due to nerve dysfunction. An imaging test is then obtained. In the decade before CT guidance, imaging studies to evaluate patients with acoustic neuromas included plain radiographs, air cisternograms, and later skull base tomography. Parenchymal imaging with computed tomography (CT) provided good visualization of the extracanalicular portion of the tumor, but small tumors in the internal auditory canal often could not be seen. With the widespread availability of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), problems in diagnosis no longer should exist. We now have exquisite imaging of both the intracanalicular and extracanalicular components of the tumor using high resolution imaging. One millimeter slices can be obtained quickly to image the cranial nerves themselves and identify the tumor through uptake of contrast enhancement. For patients in whom an evaluation of an acoustic neuroma is proposed, a (MRI) should be performed. (Fig. 7)

The Institute is on the leading edge and is an international referral center for patients with pituitary adenomas. The Institute's position is due to the fully endoscopic minimally invasive techniques used for removing pituitary tumors through the nostril without the need for any incisions. The Institute has also innovated fully endoscopic techniques for the removal of brain tumors in the posterior skull base such as meningiomas, acoustic neuromas and chordomas through dime-size openings behind the ear using minimally invasive techniques.
