Whether the cause is alcohol or other drugs, overcoming an addiction is a complicated process. Whether you may be facing an addiction yourself, or interested in the recovery process for someone close to you, it is worth understanding the many steps on the road to recovery. For most people, an addiction is not something that is sudden; instead, it sneaks up very gradually. Logically speaking, no one ever plans to become addicted: a person slowly enters that dark abyss, in most cases, without even realizing that it is happening.

A rebel in the addiction community, Peele's web site is insightful and thoughtprovoking.Category Health addictions Substance Abuse Resources...... these agencies have actually promoted reactionary views of alcoholism and addiction. Writingto SMART recovery counselors and group leaders, Stanton reminds
http://www.peele.net/
Can people use narcotics safely, even with benefits, for years? Dear Stanton, I'm a psychiatrist, and recently saw the following person in consultation: A 47 y.o successful, professional, married, caucasian male was referred for medication follow up after moving to this location. He reports that 4 years ago he began taking 40-50mg percocet daily in divided doses for the treatment of chronic, non-surgical lower back pain. Since then, he has been essentially pain-free; his alcohol consumption has gone from 4-5 oz. daily, to an occassional glass of wine with meals; his sex life has improved; he has lost 20 lbs. of excess weight; his relations at work and in the family have improved; he no longer needs any sleep medications, and discontinued anti-depressants about 2 years ago with no adverse effect. Efforts to lower his percocet have resulted in recurrent pain, irritability and increased self-medication with alcohol. Pot Planet: Adventures in Global Marijuana Culture
by Brian Preston What I discovered among the Aboriginals Harm reduction in clinical practice Asked to write about harm reduction for the leading journal for addiction counselors in the U.S., Stanton presented the essentials of harm reduction treatment. In particular, he tried to shift the mentality of counselors from the delusion that they can consistently inspire clients to abstain, to an understanding of their limited, but potentially helpful, role in improving people's lives. Of course, the assignment was quite gratifying, since it its earlier incarnation, this magazine was militantly anti-harm reduction, and attacked Stanton and some of his colleagues regularly.

All of the recovery information can be found in many meetings throughout New Jersey and as they say, "Take what you like and leave the best." Please remember that recovery is a journey that starts with a single step. For many of us taking the first step has led to a completely new way of life; freedon from the chains of addiction. If you are just starting out, be gentle with yourself. You didn't get sick over so most likely you are not going to recover overnight. I know I made many mistakes in the begining, still do for that matter. But just for today I am happy, free and sober. I wish you the peace that passes all understanding. Ralph L.

Canoe-building and addiction recovery
Welcome to my site. I have something I feel very strongly about that I want you to read, before you go on to the information on my site for which you came here. If you're not outraged, you're not paying attention:
  • Human beings are participating in a mass extinction event (global warming) that is accelerated by the burning of oil products.
  • Depletion of world oil reserves will inevitably create a crisis within the next 5-10 years that is not amenable to the usual political, economic, or military solutions.
  • "Roughly 20 percent, or $40 billion, of the United State's military budget is spent on protecting the Persian Gulf oil supply. When this $40 billion escort service is added into the price of oil, one finds that the real cost of imported Persian Gulf oil is $140 per barrel. American producers were only getting $18 per barrel at the time of the Persian Gulf War, and were going out of business at a huge rate. The reality is that most of the cost of Persian Gulf oil is the military cost. " (Republican Policy Committee, Larry E. Craig, Chairman, 105th Congress 1998.)
In the midst of this chaos is an underground of revolutionary, survivor people who have hope. They know about alternative forms of energy, they have wisdom about community and sharing, and they are both strong and humble. You, YES, YOU! could be part of this movement if you would but seek it out. It has many forms and flavors of innovation, from spiritual to political, socio-economic, and technological.
