Snoring Sends a Serious Signal
Snoring can be a lot more than an irritant to bed partners and other listeners. It’s often a symptom of progressive sleep apnea syndrome, a disorder that not only stymies the snorer’s slumber but also can have serious effects on blood pressure, risk of cardiovascular disease, stroke and even mortality. Obstructive sleep apnea, the most common disorder diagnosed through sleep studies, is a condition that not only interrupts a good night’s rest but can have significant effects on blood pressure, risk of cardiovascular disease, stroke, and even mortality. B. Tucker Woodson, MD , treats many snorers who suffer from sleep apnea. A Medical College of Wisconsin Associate Professor of Otolaryngology and Communication Sciences and Director of the Froedtert Center for Sleep, Dr. Woodson discussed sleep apnea and its consequences in a recent interview with HealthLink. “By far and away the most common sleep disorder that we see here (at the MCW sleep laboratory) is obstructive sleep apnea. It probably represents 80% or more of the sleep disorders that present to the physician for a sleep study,” Dr. Woodson said.

Increased Prevalence of Sleep Apnea in Professional Football Players January 22, 2003
A medical study of professional football players, cited in the latest issue (January 23, 2003) of The New England Journal of Medicine , suggests that obstructive sleep apnea may be present in young, physically fit men in whom the condition has previously gone undetected. This particular form of sleep-disordered breathing is a serious condition characterized by brief but numerous involuntary breathing pauses and a reduction in blood-oxygen levels during sleep. Untreated sleep apnea can lead to life threatening diseases such as heart disease, hypertension and stroke. For more information on the study:

SLEEPINESS CAN INDICATE THE PRESENCE OF SERIOUS ILLNESSES
Sleepiness whether due to sleep apnea, heavy snoring, idiopathic hypersomnia, narcolepsy, insomnia or other sleep-related disorders -threatens the health and economic security of millions of Americans. -For example, sleep apnea has been associated with heart attacks, heart failure, stroke, hypertension, abnormal heart rhythms, convulsions, memory problems, slowed thinking, irritability, mood swings, depression and high speed highway crashes Sleep apnea has been diagnosed in up to 10% of men over age 40 Loud snoring often indicates sleep apnea and related problems: with increased risk of both severe sleepiness and major health problems.

Sleep Apnea and Snoring. SLEEP APNEA:
    IMPACT ON LIFE AND FAMILY
The impact of sleep apnea can be devastating: not only upon those afflicted, but also, upon those close to them.
This extremely common and potentially devastating disorder is easily detected in most cases. Also, highly effective treatments are available. Tragically, though, in many cases, sleep apnea is ignored until it is too late. All too often, snoring is still regarded as humorous, rather than as an indicator of serious medical problems. Denial on the part of the person with the problem is commonplace. It is hoped that the following vignettecompiled from a number of actual case historieswill help increase awareness and detection of sleep apnea: thereby preventing irreversible complications that should not have to occur. Joe's head snapped up at the sound of blaring sirens and gunshots. A police car raced across the screen of the television. He rubbed his neck. His head and shoulders ached. He felt lousy and had no idea how long he had been sitting there.
