Of Horses and Zebras... by Nancy Spoolstra I first expressed my desire to be an adoptive parent at the age of 14; that goal was preceded by my declaration (at age 5) that I intended to be a veterinarian. Happily, I have achieved both goals, although I never would have guessed how unexpectedly those aspirations intertwined. I have learned much about life and people, and developed a variety of skills as a result of the education I have received from both arenas. I do not pretend to be qualified to diagnose an individual with Reactive Attachment Disorder. Many have told me that I should return to school and obtain the letters after my name that would enable me to do just that. I doubt I will, for I need no other degrees to be a good therapeutic parent to these children. I do intend to continue to insist that the mental health community and the child placing agencies get up to date with this diagnosis. I also intend to do everything I can to empower parents to demand that the professionals be a part of the solution instead of part of the problem. Attachment therapists are not insisting that all troubled children are attachment disordered. But if one would only learn the basic principles of attachment and the formation of trust, it would be much easier to understand how a troubled infancy and early childhood irrevocably impacts the future of an individual. To Contact Ken Reactive Attachment Disorder I had heard of the terms before, but only a few months ago “reactive attachment disorder”, sometimes known as “detachment disorder”, or simply “attachment disorder”, held no personal significance to me. My wife and I took our nephew in to live with us a year ago last January. While we knew, and anticipated that there would be problems, we had no idea as to the extent of his disability. Our nephew has recently been diagnosed with Reactive Attachment Disorder, or RAD, and despite the fact that this is a disorder that was barely on my screen of consciousness six months ago, my wife and I both have come to understand it reasonably well. Making it go away is another matter entirely. As a paramedic for 20 years, I have come to appreciate signs and symptoms pointing to specific diagnoses, yet was astounded to see how closely and how clearly our nephew fit the pattern for reactive attachment disorder. I only wish that treating the problem were as easy as diagnosing it appears to be. My wife and I have been devouring all of the information we can find on attachment disorders and, as we have learned more, we’ll be adding to this site. If you’ve just begun your own search for ways in which you can help your child, this is a good place to start. Correlation Between Bipolar Disorder and Reactive Attachment Disorder By John F. Alston, M.D. Historically, mental health professionals have long associated Attention Deficit Disorder with Reactive Attachment Disorder. It is true that children who have been abused and/or neglected do have attentional problems secondary to their abusive circumstances or brain maturational problems. Experts have put this correlation of ADD and RAD (Reactive Attachment Disorder) at between 40% and 70% for either abused/neglected children and/or adopted children. In my experience as psychiatric consultant to the Attachment Center at Evergreen since 1977, as well as within my own private practice and consultations with other attachment programs and adoption agencies in which I supervise psychotherapists who work with attachment disorders, I have come to realize that Attention Deficit Disorder is vastly overdiagnosed in this clinical population, leading to inadequate, even contraindicated treatment. I have concluded that correlations between Bipolar Disorder and Reactive Attachment Disorder are indeed much more common. This conclusion has led to different, and in my experience, much more effective medical treatment plans for these children. I have reached the above conclusion gradually over the last several years. In the past twenty five years, since my graduation from medical school, I have diagnosed and treated approximately 3,500 cases of ADD and approximately 1,000 cases of Bipolar Disorder. Particularly in my role as a consultant to The Attachment Center at Evergreen program, it has been my professional privilege and pleasure to assess and treat children from all over the United States and at least a few foreign countries. In my experience, this miscorrelation between ADD and Reactive Attachment Disorder is international.

I am writing to reply to a colleague's inquiry. She stated that she recently became aware of a mental health program that specializes in treating children with reactive attachment disorders. Her understanding of the program was that the child was asked to sit with their hands on their knees and then exposed to EMDR in order to deal with any past traumatic experiences. The child is forced, through physical restraint by the parents and the therapists to comply with the expected sitting position and the EMDR process. In addition, if the child requests, pleads, screams for the EMDR process to be stopped because of the intensity of the memories (or for any other reason) the therapists do not comply. The therapists justification for this is that, although the child may be retraumatized by the process, this only serves to facilitate their access to and experience of the memories. She was referring to a program that I founded and that I currently direct. I would like to take this opportunity to respond to her inquiry. I will also reply to the opinion writers. I welcome her inquiry and appreciate her qualification which stated that she was describing the program as she understood it. Her understanding and description of our program does not accurately characterize either the theoretical foundation or the treatment protocol.

Welcome to the Attachment Disorder Site Our Journey Our story begins on April 3, 1996, the day we brought our then 4- year- old son home from a Romanian orphanage. From the moment he came home, he was a whirlwind of hyperactivity - touching everything, defiant, destructive, loud, violent and rageful. I noticed some other strange behaviors right away. Rocking back and forth and from side to side, refusing to eat, lack of eye contact, an apparent need to be in control of everyone and every situation, and a propensity to illicit angry responses from both myself and my husband - what we called "pushing our buttons". He had no fear of strangers often just walking up to a stranger and touching them and talking to them. He would hug me with his back when I would go for a hug and he flinched when I touched him yet he would be happy to give hugs to anyone not in his immediate family. I suppose the worst behaviors were the defiant ones - bossiness, arguing, and sassiness. No amount of behavior modification - sticker charts, etc. - worked with him. He just didn't seem to learn from his mistakes. I read all the traditional parenting books and tried many different techniques. Sometimes, they would work for a small amount of time but inevitably; we would end up back at the beginning. I started to think it was my fault. That I wasn't loving him enough, that I needed to give him more time and be more patient. By the time he went to kindergarten and then first grade, he was a constant behavioral problem.

Children with attachment disorders have trouble trusting others. Trusting means to loveand loving hurts. They have been hurt too deeply.
