CHILDREN WITH ATTACHMENT DISORDERS
Children with Attachment Disorder have not developed healthy, secure attachments with parental figures because something impeded their abilities to learn to trust in others and develop healthy self-concepts. Neglect, abuse, maternal addiction or depression, and having multiple caregivers during the first three years of life, are some of the ways this can happen. When a parent is unable to positively respond and attune to an infant, the baby internalizes a negative view of himself and the world. He feels unlovable and experiences others as uncaring and untrustworthy. His impaired attachment can negatively affect him for the rest of his life.

RAD: What Is It?
As a fairly new diagnosis to the DSM-IV manual, Reactive Attachment Disorder (RAD), sometimes known as Attachment Disorder (AD), is frequently misunderstood, and is misdiagnosed as Bipolar Disorder or Attention Deficit Disorder as often as 70% of the time. Today, perhaps more so than at any point in history, kids are apt to be separated, ignored, or neglected by their birth parents, shuttled between multiple foster parents and day care workers, or traumatized by physical, sexual, or emotional abuse. Even while physically present, some mothers are yet incapable of providing adequate care and attention for their children. RAD kids have learned that the world is unsafe, and that the adults around them can’t be trusted to meet their needs. They have developed a protective shell around their emotions, isolating themselves from dependency on adult caregivers. Rather than depending on their parents or other adults to protect them, the protective shell becomes the child’s only means of coping with the world. Dependent only upon themselves for protection, they come to see anyone who is trying to remove this protective barrier as a threat, not to their emotional well being, but to their very lives. They turn on those who seek to help them the most.

One Parent's Plea
If I might venture a guess, as an onlooker, you may be one who wags your finger at parents of children such as those responsible for the Columbine massacre, and say, "Duh, why didn't those parents do something with those kids before it got to that point?" What kind of kids do you think those kids are? Maybe the kind I just described? Yes, and I am one of those parents. I have a seven-year-old that could quite possibly be the next Columbine gunman, unless he has help now. And I am doing something-or trying to. But now the state wants to take away one of the only weapons I have in my battle for the soul of my son.
I moved to Utah from Kansas a year ago because we didn't have access to the highly-skilled and experienced therapists that you have here at Cascade Center for Family Growth in Orem. Larry Van Bloem at Cascade has an unblemished reputation nationwide in attachment circles for understanding both the behavioral and the neurological problems associated with our son's problem, reactive attachment disorder. After trying traditional talk therapy, play therapy, and even other forms of holding therapy, we chose to move here for Larry's unique understanding of our son's neurological problems and his experience in dealing with clients with a background of severe trauma.

28. Bonding And Attachment
Gives information on the stages of attachment and bonding chronologically through infancy as they relate to attachment disorder.
http://www.washingtonparent.com/articles/9711/bonding.htm
Washington Parent Magazine Bonding and Attachment When it Goes Right Lawrence B. Smith, L.C.S.W.-C., L.I.C.S.W. B Bonding and attachment are terms that are often used interchangeably. However, the stages of infancy and toddlerhood are more accurately portrayed by distinguishing bonding from attachment. Bonding These two bonding cycles form the foundation out of which attachment grows. While bonding is about trust, attachment is about affection. Attachment can be defined as a person-specific relationship that is dominated by affectionate interchanges. It is not a prisoner of immediate time and space, but extends beyond that. Attachment initially grows out of many instances of a young infant experiencing her parent as reflecting her emotional state. As a child grows, other mutually satisfying interactions add to the parent-child attachment. Attachment at Different Ages The indications that bonding and attachment are progressing in a healthy manner vary as an infant grows. In the first month of life, an infant experiences herself as one with the surrounding environment. The basic developmental task is for an infant to achieve a physiological balance and rhythm. This balance evolves out of numerous completions of the infant bonding cycle and prepares the way for bonding and attachment.

    What Is Attachment Disorder?
When this initial attachment is lacking, children lack the ability to form and maintain loving, intimate relationships. They grow up with an impaired ability to trust that the world is a safe place and that others will take good care of them. Without this sense of trust, children believes that they must be hypervigilant about their own safety. Unfortunately, their idea about safety prevents them from allowing others to take care of them in a loving, nurturing manner. They become extremely demanding and controlling in response to their fear. Emotionally they believe that if they do not control their world then they will die. Children without proper care in the first few years of life have an unusually high level of stress hormones, which adversely effect the way crucial aspects of the brain and body develop. Conscience development is dependent upon brain development and follows attachment. Therefore, these children lack prosocial values and morality as well as demonstrating aggressive, disruptive and antisocial behaviors. There are many reasons why the development of this connection can be disrupted. Factors that may contribute to impaired attachment include:

R eactive attachment disorder isn't new.
Canda R. Byrne, an advanced registered nurse in private practice and certified clinical specialist in psych/mental health, said attachment disorders have been studied for at least 25 years but are just now gaining more recognition. The disorder is difficult to treat and often hard to diagnose. In the normal infant-trust development situation, the infant discovers a need: He's hungry or his diaper needs changing. The baby cries, and the mother comes and feeds him or changes his diaper, cooing, smiling and interacting with the child at the same time. The child learns that his needs will be met and learns to develop trust. Byrne said attachment develops in the first 26 months of life, building from one month to the next. But if the infant is in an orphanage or a neglectful or abusive home where the infant cries and no one meets his demands, he learns he can't trust anyone, Byrne said.

And why do social workers and school authorities find it so difficult to identify children with the potential to harm other children? Often it can be traced back to Attachment Disorder a mental and emotional condition occurring during the first three years of life that causes a child not to attach, bond or trust his primary caretaker. It's often the result of abuse, severe neglect or a foster care system unable to prevent children from bouncing from one placement to another. Attachment Disorder and its treatment have been hot topics in the news recently. "Children with this condition often wind up thieves, drug addicts or even murderers," said Terri Adams, President of Heal the Hearts Foundation . Yet today they are sitting in schoolrooms, playing in community parks, even eating at the family table.

Our mission has always been to find adoptive homes and clinical resources for children with special needs. These children have a variety of emotional, educational, medical and, sometimes, physical disorders. Twenty-five years later, our mission has expanded to include assisting all families, birth and adoptive, to find permanence and stability. In May of 1998 the Attachment Center of South Carolina (ACSC) officially opened. This was a long time dream for the agency since we have been serving clients and training therapists since 1989. We provide treatment for children with attachment problems/disorders, including Reactive Attachment Disorder, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, and other related disorders. We treat many children who, along with their attachment problems, have co-morbid conditions such as Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, Anxiety Disorders, ADHD and other conditions. Target Population We will consider working with any child from birth to twenty-one years of age. The majority of the ACSC’s clients are children ages four to sixteen who have been adopted or who are in the foster care system. We treat children with histories of abuse and neglect, multiple placements, histories of institutional care, and internationally adopted children. We have also treated children who live with their birth families. All services are on an outpatient basis.
