Bad Breath 15 Tips to Clear the Air

    A Rodale Press contribution
Do friends politely excuse themselves when your dog is panting nearby? Do you suddenly lose your appetite when your cat gives you a kiss? Oooh, that smell. It's enough to make a grown dog wince. If your pet's breath packs a potent punch, chances are the culprit is plaque, the same bacteria-laden film that develops on your teeth if you don't brush for a while and can lead to a smelly and sometimes dangerous gum infection. With a little care, however, you can help prevent your pet's breath from turning too pungent. For Dogs and Cats Attack the plaque. "Think of how your mouth would smell if you didn't brush your teeth for a few days, much less a few years," says Anthony Shipp, D.V.M., a veterinarian in private practice in Beverly Hills, California, who specializes in dentistry and is co-author of The Practitioner's Guide to Veterinary Dentistry . Brushing twice a day would be ideal, says Dr. Shipp, but twice a week is okay.

    WHAT CAUSES BAD BREATH?
IF YOU CANNOT PROPERLY BRUSH OR FLOSS YOUR TEETH IMMEDIATELY AFTER EATING, TRY TO RINSE YOUR MOUTH WITH WATER - THIS WILL HELP TO DISLODGE FOOD PARTICLES AND MOISTEN YOUR MOUTH
    • Food: Foods such as garlic and onions are especially known to contribute to bad breath. When we eat, the food is absorbed into the bloodstream and transferred to our lungs. As we breathe the odour is expelled, causing bad breath. This lasts until our body has eliminated the food. If you cannot properly brush or floss your teeth immediately after eating, try to rinse your mouth with water - this will help to dislodge food particles and moisten your mouth. If your meal comes with raw parsley as a garnish - chew on it - it's a natural breath freshener!
Improper oral hygiene: Proper tooth and tongue brushing and flossing can make all the difference if you suffer from bad breath. Without proper oral hygiene, food particles and bacteria left in the mouth after eating can cause bad breath. It is important to learn the proper way to brush and floss, and then practice what you learn.
Smoking: Along with the damage that smoking does to our overall health, teeth and gums, it is also a cause of bad breath.

WELCOME TO FRESHBREATHONLINE BAD BREATH !! Are you worried about this in a moment of an intimate embrace or do you fear compromising the success of closing that very important business deal? These are genuine concerns and it is good to know that health care professionals now understand the causes of halitosis (Bad breath). Like yourself, many people are genuinely concerned about having bad breath and probably for good reason! The problem is, even your best friend will probably not tell you that you have this problem through fear of causing personal offence. As a qualified, professional practising dental practitioner, I am particularly interested in bad breath (Halitosis). Why? I am certainly aware of the problem with some of my patients but I suspect that I too have suffered from bad breath! As a dentist I am often in close proximity to people when talking and treating them. From a professional and socially acceptable perspective it is essential that I am quite sure that I am not offending peoples noses with smelly breath! Now I am lucky because I usually can wear a mask while working but I am even more fortunate because I believe I do know the cause and effective treatment for bad breath.……..and the cure doesn't rely on sucking mints all day !! Factsheet Uncovering and Eliminating Bad Breath Almost everyone has bad breath, also known as halitosis, occasionally. It can occur when you wake up in the morning or after eating certain foods, e.g., onions and garlic. Once you uncover the source of the problem, there are several ways that you can keep your mouth free from unpleasant odors, according to the American Dental Hygienists' Association. There are three basic reasons for bad breath. The first is simple: an unclean mouth. If you don't routinely clean your teeth, gums and tongue, plaque—a soft, sticky, almost invisible film made up of harmful bacteria—will build up and eventually cause bad breath. If you wear braces or dentures, you should be especially conscientious about brushing and rinsing after eating. Second, medical problems can cause fresh breath to go sour. For example, bad breath can be caused by a stomach disorder, a sinus infection with excess postnasal drip, or the way your body chemistry interacts with medications. Third, daily habits also play a role. For example, smoking or chewing tobacco can affect your breath.

OraSweet Tongue Scraper is helping literally thousands of people enjoy Fresh, Clean, Sweet Breath by Eliminating Oral Bacteria that cause Bad Breath, Gum Disease, Dental Decay and Plaque! It does the job quickly, gently and thoroughly! The Bad Breath Originates from Bacteria on the Tongue. In an article published in the Journal of the American Dental Association (April 1996), Dr. Mel Rosenberg cites 6 research references in concluding that: In 85% of people with bad breath, the bad odor originates in the mouth. On the investigative news program "20/20," ABC News Medical Editor Dr. Johnson explained that most bad breath is caused by a type of bacteria in the back of the tongue. Furthermore, according to Dr. Price, who was on the Today Show, 90% of bad breath is from the mouth itself.
OraSweet has a very effective scraping edge that is specifically designed to slide along the tongue, effectively scraping away bad breath causing bacteria, especially the dorso-posterior part, the hard to reach back of the tongue. OraSweet, the most effective, attractively designed and user-friendly tongue cleaner available on the market, embraces the scraped area, preventing decaying food particles, those evil bad breath causing bacteria and other oral debris from scattering all over the mouth and being swallowed.

Don't Let Bad Breath Ruin Your Party
    Explicit Health
    By ALEXIS MUNOZ
This past weekend, my girlfriend met a guy at a birthday party. At first, this guy seemed flawless he had the right moves on the dance floor, was dressed to impress and had a beautiful smile. He approached my girlfriend, but as he talked a red flag went up in her mind and it kept waving around and telling her to walk away. His raunchy-smelling, bad breath was disgusting her. Inevitably, my girlfriend could not stand the odor of garlic breath and beer so she excused herself from the conversation and stepped outside to get fresh air.
Unfortunately for this poor guy and many others, bad breath is a universal problem, and I am going to discuss what bad breath is, ways to determine if you have it and measures you can take to prevent it.
Bad breath refers to an unpleasant, unusual or offensive odor of the breath which is created by sulfur compounds in the mouth and the stomach.
Over 170 different types of bacteria live in our mouths and they hide everywhere from the gums to the insides of cheeks. Several common places bacteria hide are within the crevices of the tongue, and under a protective layer of mucus and proteins, according to the British Dental Association.

    Bad Breath
    Causes
There are a number of causes of bad breath, foremost among them being bacteria in the mouth, stomach and intestinal disturbances, bowel sluggishness, sinus or throat infections, and tobacco and alcohol use. • Stress is another cause which may not be readily apparent when you are looking for reasons for bad breath. Stress affects the digestive system. An insufficient supply of digestive enzymes may be another cause. • Other sources of bad breath are in the nose and the nasopharynx, the area above the base of your tongue. • Dieting may be a cause of bad breath. • Bad breath may emanate from the back of the throat due to sinus or tonsil infections resulting in excess bacteria. See Sinus Problems in our Ailments section for more information. If you have sinus or throat problems you may well have some form of allergy. See Allergies in our Ailments section for more information. • Bad breath may also be the sign of potentially more serious medical conditions such as diabetes, duodenal ulcers, gastroesophageal reflux, hypoglycemia, kidney or liver malfunction, and respiratory disorders. • The foods eaten also are a potential cause of halitosis. Certain foods, such as garlic, onions and certain spices are frequently cited as cause for a person's bad breath. Both vegetarians and those who eat large quantities of meat may develop bad breath due, in part, to the digestive process. Digestion begins in the mouth. Saliva has enzymes which begin the digestion process, and the type of food eaten can affect the food chemistry of the mouth. Saliva will also pick up odors from food within several hours after it has been eaten. Odors are strongest from carbohydrates - sugars, starches and cellulose, less strong from proteins, and nonexistent from fats. Bacteria in the mouth react with the decaying food and drink residue and can be the source of the foul odor.

Most people suffer from bad breath occasionally. However, if it becomes permanent you should consult your dentist. Most adults suffer from bad breath occasionally, although it may affect up to a quarter of adults on a regular basis. Bad breath is usually brought on by the breakdown of proteins by bacteria somewhere in the mouth. However, there are several other possible causes that affect the airways, oesphagus and stomach that can also lead to bad breath.

UGH! I HAVE A BAD BREATH. What is bad breath?
Bad breath is usually caused by bacteria that grow in the mouth. These bacteria release foul smelling compounds causing your breath to smell. Eating pungent food like onion, garlic may cause your breath to smell bad. Other medical conditions like sinusitis or gum disease may also cause bad breath. So now how do you prevent bad breath?
Using mouth wash, sugar free chewing gum or sucking mints may temporarily help to mask the odor but it will not treat the problem. So ensure proper cleanliness of teeth

Peer Review Status: Internally Peer Reviewed As a student anesthetist, one day I gave chloroform to ear, nose, and throat patients and then asked a date to lunch. I got my come-uppance from Elizabeth. She exclaimed "Whew! You really do smell like a hospital!" That's when I realized absorbed things could be on the breath for quite a time. Garlic and onions behave just like the chloroform and come from your lungs and not from the stomach. If anxious or depressed you may unconsciously exaggerate how bad you think your breath is. One dentist suggested, "If you want to know how your breath smells, sniff your used dental floss or plaque removal pick." Of course your spouse or significant other can candidly tell you. It is uncommon to produce bad smells directly from inside the body. A few unfortunate individuals can't process fishy smelling choline, because they lack a breakdown enzyme. They have to memorize a list of foods high in choline, like beans, to be avoided; otherwise their breath, sweat and urine smell fishy. The word for bad breath is halitosis (breath in Latin). Three factors are important in avoiding bad breath. A good flow of saliva, a clean tongue especially the back, and the avoidance of smelly bacterial growth in the mouth. Bad smelly bacteria are those that grow without oxygen and are called anaerobic. These bad bacteria relate to poor mouth hygiene.

    Bad Breath (Halitosis)
What causes bad breath? Bad breath can be caused by many things, including odor-causing foods, tooth decay, periodontal (gum) disease, continued mouth dryness, use of tobacco products, sinus or respiratory infections, some medical disorders, inadequate oral hygiene or some medications. Is bad breath the sign of a medical disorder? It can be. Conditions that may cause bad breath include a local infection in the respiratory tract, gastrointestinal disturbance or liver or kidney ailments. Consult your dentist if you have chronic bad breath. What can you do about bad breath? If you think you have constant bad breath, keep a record of the foods you eat and medications you take. Let your dentist know about your concern, and tell them if you've had any surgery or illness since your last appointment. Brush twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste to remove any food debris and plaque. Brush your tongue, too. Once a day, use floss or an interdental cleaner to clean between teeth. If you wear removable dentures, take them out at night. Clean them thoroughly before replacing them the next morning. How effective are halitosis kits?
