First Appeared Thursday, 19 December '02 ‘War on Cancer’ Talks Draw Overflow Crowd There is no reason to write-off “anti-angiogenesis” drugs for cancer. That was one of the messages by leading cancer scientists who recently discussed “The War on Cancer: Where are We?” The December 7 event, dubbed a “minisymposium” by organizers, drew an overflow crowd to the HSW 300 auditorium on Parnassus.

E-mail story
The symposium featured talks by several UCSF researchers, an industry scientist, and Judah Folkman, the Julia Dyckman Andrus Professor of Pediatric Surgery at Children’s Hospital Boston and Harvard Medical School, whose laboratory studies of new blood vessel growth, a phenomenon known as angiogenesis, have attracted an unusual amount of media attention in recent years. Studies published by Folkman and colleagues in 1998 led to much hype: a front-page New York Times article quoted DNA double helix co-discoverer James D. Watson, saying that Folkman was going to cure cancer. Reports of Folkman’s mouse studies described how tumors disappeared when treated with endostatin or angiostatin, natural “anti-angiogenesis” proteins first identified in the Folkman laboratory. Solid tumors need their own blood supply to grow larger than the smallest pinhead, and this knowledge, along with Folkman’s laboratory findings, have been driving forces behind pharmaceutical industry efforts to develop anti-angiogenesis drugs that target new blood vessel growth in cancer.

Dr Bergers studies the functional importance of angiogenesis in tumor development and progression. She has utilized a transgenic mouse model of pancreatic islet cell carcinogenesis to elucidate mechanisms and impact of angiogenesis during tumor formation. She identified that the angiogenic factor VEGF is critical for the angiogenic switch and regulated posttranscriptionally, via proteolytic release from the extracellular matrix by the metalloproteinase MMP-9 that is expressed by inflammatory cells. This work was published in Nature Cell Biology in 2000. She furthermore translated the studies into experimental therapeutic approaches and designed preclinical trials at three distinct stages of disease progression aimed at preventing the angiogenic switch in premalignant lesions, intervening in the rapid expansion of small tumors, or inducing the regression of large end-stage cancers. She was the first to publish that angiogenesis inhibitors have different efficacies depending on the stage of carcinogenesis being targeted (

Die Zahl "300 000" nennt die "American Academy of Neurology" ("AAN") in einem Informationstext; Zitat: Originaltext: "What is Multiple Sclerosis? Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a common disabling neurologic disorder of young adults, affecting at least 300,000 Americans. The average age of diagnosis 30, but it typically starts anywhere between the ages of 15 and 50. Occasionally, the disease begins in children or in older adults. Women are affected at least twice as often as men. It is more common in persons of Northern European heritage, and people with MS are distributed in a remarkable geographic pattern. The highest density occurs in those living furthest from the equator, that is, in temperate zones. There are several types of MS. Most people with MS begin with relapsing remitting disease - that is, it starts with an abrupt onset of neurological problems like numbness or tingling, weakness, or unsteady gait, that either improve spontaneously or with treatment of the symptoms - only to come back again or "relapse." Until recently, when the first treatment became available, most people with relapsing or remitting MS eventually developed a secondary or chronic progressive form of the disease. Ultimately, over one half of people with MS will experience a progressive course."

Glomerulonephritis is a kidney disease. The kidneys' filters become inflamed and scarred and slowly lose their ability to remove wastes and excess water from the blood to make urine. Kidney disease of diabetes, IgA nephropathy, and lupus nephritis are some types of glomerulonephritis. On this hub page, you will find reviewed and categorized links about glomerulonephritis.
