Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) provides a detailed look at chronic bronchitis and emphysema, the two major diseases of the lung grouped under COPD. Diagrams of the airways are included with comprehensive descriptions of signs and symptoms of the disease, detection, and treatment. Special attention is given to ways patients and their families can cope with this illness and what types of clinical research are under way to understand the causes of COPD, improve treatment, and help patients manage the disease. 26 pages. American Lung Association Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), is the fourth leading cause of death in the United States, a major cause of death throughout the world, and the third leading cause for disability in the United States. No wonder that when the doctor utters those initials, "COPD" or "Emphesema", for the first time, the individual goes into a state of shock and depression. This web site is dedicated to helping you understand that is not necessary !
This Jukebox will appear on every page. If you click on it, you will be taken to music controls so you can stop the music or if you have a sound card and not hearing anything, you can go for a tune. Diagnosis of COPD is not necessarily a death sentence!
There are options for the COPD patient!
The COPD patient can make the difference! L ike most web sites of this nature, the authors do not intend to provide advice on the medical treatment of this disease. Treatment of medical problems is a very complex procedure best left up to medical professionals. It is appropriate for the patient to form a partnership with their physicians to achieve optimum treatment and to realize appropriate progress.

chronic obstructive pulmonary disease By Rebecca Bascom, MD Images (click to view larger image) Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, also called COPD, is actually a group of lung diseases. People with COPD have limitations in the airflow through their airways. The limitation usually worsens over time. Lungs of people with COPD become easily inflamed from noxious particles or gases. The airways produce extra mucus, which is coughed up as sputum. Chronic bronchitis and emphysema are two common types of COPD. Chronic bronchitis is an ongoing inflammation of the large airways. Emphysema is a chronic disease in which the tissues of the lungs are gradually destroyed. What is going on in the body? Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease is caused by exposure to noxious gases or particles, especially cigarette smoke. Over time, this exposure damages the airways. The airways try to protect themselves by making more mucus. However, the lungs may slowly get damaged from chronic irritation. The increased mucus and lung damage can be permanent. The World Health Organization (WHO) has recently developed a classification system for the severity of COPD. There are four stages of severity, as outlined below:

Disease: a definite morbid process, often with a characteristic train of symptoms COPD affects an estimated 17 million Americans, and its incidence is rising. It now ranks fifth among the major causes of death in the United States. The disorder affects men more frequently than women. COPD dosesn't always produce symptoms and causes only minimal disability in many patients, it tends to worsen with time. COPD includes: emphysema, chronic bronchitis, asthma, or any combination of them. Frequently, more than one of these underlying conditions coexist. Usually bronchitis and emphysema occur together. Cause: May be brought on by cigarette smoking, recurrent or chronic respiratory infection, and or allergies Symptoms: Dyspnea (difficulty breathing) on minimal exertion

    The Burden of COPD
Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), which encompasses both chronic bronchitis and emphysema, is one of the commonest respiratory conditions of adults in the the developed world. Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease poses an enormous burden to society both in terms of direct cost to healthcare services and indirect costs to society through loss of productivity. The exact prevalence of COPD is difficult to determine because of problems with definition and coding. Sometimes it is difficult to differentiate between COPD and chronic severe asthma, and patients with mild to moderate disease may not be identified as suffering from COPD. In the western world, COPD is probably the fourth commonest cause of death in middle aged to elderly men after ischaemic heart disease, lung cancer and cerebrovascular disease. In the UK, it is estimated that 18% of males and 14% of females aged 40-68 years may have developed features of COPD, and in the USA, 13.6% of males and 11.8% of females aged 65-74 years are thought to have COPD. According to statistics produced by the American Lung Association, 15 million Americans suffer from COPD and it claimed the lives of 87,000 Americans in 1992. In the UK, respiratory conditions are the third commonest cause of chronic sickness in working aged people age 45-64 years, is the commonest cause of respiratory related death (fig.1), and COPD accounts for 56% of days of certified incapacity due to respiratory conditions in males. In 1989, an estimated $7 billion was spent on provision of care for patients with COPD in the USA, with a further cost of $8 billion due to lost productivity.

Emphysema and chronic bronchitis are the most common forms of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Causes, incidence, and risk factors Return to top The leading cause of COPD is smoking, which can lead to the two most common forms of this disease, emphysema and chronic bronchitis. Prolonged tobacco use causes lung inflammation and variable degrees of air sack (alveoli) destruction. This leads to inflamed and narrowed airways ( chronic bronchitis ); or permanently enlarged air sacks of the lung with reduced lung elasticity ( emphysema ). Between 15-20% of long-term smokers will develop COPD. Rarely, an enzyme deficiency called alpha-1 anti-trypsin deficiency can cause emphysema in non-smokers.

    Dr. Doherty:
    How are you doing?
    Erin:
Well, thank you. Loni's parents, Andy and Maxine, were heavy smokers for nearly 40 years, and both suffered from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, a disease that eventually took their lives.

    Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)
The COPD Lung Profiler™ - Help With Treatment Decisions March 2002 Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) includes emphysema and chronic bronchitisdiseases that are characterized by obstruction to air flow. Emphysema and chronic bronchitis frequently coexist. Thus physicians prefer the term COPD. It does not include other obstructive diseases such as asthma. COPD, which is the fourth leading cause of death, claims the lives of 119,524 Americans annually.
  • The annual cost to the nation for COPD is approximately $30.4 billion, including healthcare expenditures of $14.7 billion and indirect costs of $15.7 billion.
  • Approximately 80 to 90 percent of COPD cases are caused by smoking; a smoker is 10 times more likely than a nonsmoker to die of COPD. Other known causes are frequent lung infections and exposure to certain industrial pollutants.
  • Chronic bronchitis is an inflammation and eventual scarring of the lining of the bronchial tubes. An estimated 8.8 million people were diagnosed with chronic bronchitis in 1999.
  • Females tend to have higher rates of chronic bronchitis than males.

Emphysema and Chronic Bronchitis March 30, 2003

  • Prevention: Cutting Controllable Risks
  • The COPD Lung Profiler™ - Help With Treatment Decisions Nearly 16 million Americans are estimated to suffer from some form of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) about 14 million from chronic bron-chitis and about 2 million from emphysema. COPD is the fourth-ranking cause of death just behind heart ailments, cancers, and stroke. COPD, which includes emphysema and chronic bronchitis, claimed the lives of more than 112,584 Americans in 1998. Classic emphysema develops after many years of assault on lung tissues. The walls between the tiniest air sacs within the lungs break down, and those compart-ments become unnaturally enlarged. Elasticity of the lung tissue is lost, and the lungs become distended, unable to expand and contract normally. As emphysema progresses, the effort needed to breathe increases and, ultimately, each breath becomes a chore. Chronic bronchitis
