COSTOCHONDRITIS OVERVIEW: DIAGNOSIS: The patient with costochondritis will have chest pain. It can be either to the left or right of the sternum. Chest pain is a symptom that we should not ignore, as it may indicate a serious problem with our heart or lungs. The doctor will perform a careful history and physical exam, and possibly order x-rays or blood tests to rule out any serious problem. If costochondritis is present, the doctor will discover tenderness over the joints and ribs of the chest wall. The diagnostic studies will also be negative, ruling out serious abnormalities of the lungs and heart. Acetaminophen should not be taken by anyone with known liver or kidney disease. Do not drink alcohol when taking more than 1 dose of acetaminophen.

Costochondritis is inflammation in the costal cartilage. Anytime there are an area of pain in the body, the surrounding areas tend to *guard* against movement of that area. In your case, your intercostal muscles may be spending the day tensed up, to keep movement at a minimum in your chest. Very often when muscles are used in a way that is not natural, they react by having spasms. This may be what's occuring. Your intercostal muscles and your heart, are two different types of muscle. What affects one does not have to (and often doesn't) affect the other. So if your spasms are from overuse, your heart will not be affected at all. You need to have this all checked out by your doctor. If it is as I described, then there are treatments and therapy that can help relax those muscles, so that they don't spasm. Keep in mind though, that there are other possible reasons for the spasms, which is why your doctor needs to examine you.
