Dissociation and Dissociative Disorders
Sources Listed At The Bottom Dissociation Dissociation is a mental process which produces a lack of connection in a person's thoughts, memories, feelings, actions, or sense of identity. During the period of time when a person is dissociating, certain information is not associated with other information as it normally would be. Because this process can produce changes in memory, people who frequently dissociate often find their senses of personal history and identity are affected. Dissociation may become automatic responses to anxiety and anticipated anxiety, even in non-abusive situations. Even after the traumatic circumstance is long past, the vestigial pattern of defensive dissociation remains. Dissociative Disorders Most clinicians believe that dissociation exists on a continuum of severity. At one end are mild dissociative experiences common to most people, at the other extreme is complex, chronic dissociation. There is a great deal of overlap of symptoms and experiences among the various Dissociative Disorders. Individuals should seek help from qualified mental health providers to answer questions about their own particular circumstances. Psychogenic Amnesia Psychogenic Fugue Depersonalization Disorder

INTRODUCTION Why I Created This Site Mental Illness is a Medical Disorder DSM-IV Definition of Depersonalization, and Merck Manual Definition Progression of My DP Onset
But in reconstructing my past, I see significant changes, significant improvements, that have slowly evolved over time with proper medications and appropriate therapy. I want to say what I never thought I would say years ago; there is hope, there is reason to continue the fight. Depersonalization, depression, and anxiety are all neuropsychiatric, neurological illnesses that can be treated. There may be no cure for me in my lifetime, but neurobiology and medicine have made such great strides in just the last five years of the 20th Century there is great reason for hope. At minimum a greatly improved quality of life is within reach for those receiving appropriate neuropsychiatric treatment especially with early intervention. I see this site as helping me process the past and acknowledge the subtle but very real improvements I am experiencing. I am finally internalizing both the good and the bad of my childhood, as well as accepting that I am mentally ill, coping with a neurological disorder no different from any other physical illness. I am accepting my limitations and working around them. I finally see my parents as being both positive and negative influences. I hope to find compassion in seeing they were mentally ill themselves. And I am seeing there is no shame in being mentally ill, it is not "weakness of character," and should be regarded as a physical illness like any other. The stigma of mental illness must come to an end.

Section of Neuroscience and Emotion
The Section of Neuroscience and Emotion has a large programme of research which aims to examine the way in which the normal human brain responds to emotion, and how abnormalities in emotion processing may contribute to the formation of symptoms in specific psychiatric populations. We are examining responses to emotional stimuli, and, using functional magnetic resonance Imaging (fMRI) and structural MRI, are examining neural responses to emotional stimuli presented in different sensory modalities in normal subjects and in patients with bipolar disorder and unipolar depression. In particular, the aim is to examine the neurobiological mechanisms underlying mood dysregulation in patients with affective disorders. This research runs in parallel with the Mood Disorders clinical service based in North East Lambeth and the Maudsley Hospital, and headed by Dr. Mary Phillips. The work of the section also aims to examine the nature of the specific abnormalities in emotion processing underlying other psychiatric symptomatolotgy, including the emotional blunting experienced by patients with primary Depersonalization Disorder, the persecutory delusions of patients with paranoid schizophrenia, and abnormalities in the perception of disgust experienced by patients with particular symptom subdimensions of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD). Dr. Phillips and Professor A. S. David are co-directors of the Depersonalization Research Unit clinical service established as a national service for patients with Depersonalization Disorder.
