P eople with diabetes The Internet is a wonderful help in diabetes management because there is so much information and support and so many services offered. But like just about everything else on the Internet and the rest of on-line space, this support and these information resources for people with diabetes are fragmented and hard to find. This Web page brings together in one place descriptions of and links to all those places where people with diabetes can find resources that they can use. Those links that I think are especially valuable are marked in red.

This Week's Feature: More Than Just a Pretty Smile Oral Health for People With Diabetes by Joan I. Gluch, R.D.H., Ph.D., and Susanne K. Giorgio, R.D.H. To most people, a pretty smile means white, straight teeth and fresh breath. However, a pretty smile may not always be a healthy smile, and people with diabetes face special challenges in keeping both a healthy and pretty smile. Recent research has shown a relationship between healthy gums and teeth, blood glucose levels in the normal range, and overall good health in people with diabetes. Each one is dependent on the other two. This three-way interdependence challenges people with diabetes to keep their mouths healthy as part of their diabetes care regimen. Click Here to Continue...

69. Hypoglycemia - Diabetes
diabetes and You Emergency in Hypoglycemia.
http://www.sokkari.com/hypoglycemia.htm
Hypoglycaemia Emergency in Hypoglycaemia Hypoglycemia is commonly called "low blood sugar". Even people who do not have diabetes have episodic low blood sugar when they have not eaten enough or exercised vigorously. The difference in common episodic low blood sugar and the severe hypoglycemia of diabetes is the potential for natural processes of the body to respond and recover from it. In diabetes, hypoglycemia occurs in combination with medication that is intended to keep blood glucose down. If low blood sugar occurs in diabetes, it is usually the result of an oversupply of medication relative to the amount of carbohydrate eaten and/or exercise done. Because of this medication, a normal recovery from low blood sugar (increase glucose release from the liver) is not possible. When blood glucose levels drop below 60 mg/dl, most people will experience symptoms of shakiness, irritability, fatique, etc. If a person with diabetes senses these symptoms at this blood sugar level, carbohydrate treatment should be initiated and recovery quick. In some people, however, especially those who have had diabetes for many years, hypoglycemia may not be easily detected. Or it may come on and advance very rapidly. In these situations, blood glucose levels can fall to dangerous levels.

Orlistat chosen as weightloss drug for Look AHEAD study, the first long-term study of weight loss' effects in people with type 2 diabetes. (August 2001)
http://www.therasense.com/diabetes_news/news_081001.htm
August 10, 2001 Orlistat Chosen As Weight-Loss Medication For Look AHEAD Study The multicenter, randomized clinical trial, launched at the annual meeting of the American Diabetes Association, will examine the effects of a lifestyle intervention program in approximately 5,000 volunteers. Funded by the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) of the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH), it is the largest study on the effects of weight-loss interventions ever funded by the NIH. "We're very excited that Xenical has been selected for an NIH study of weight loss in type 2 diabetics of this scope and magnitude," said Dr. Henry Solomon, Roche. "This underscores our ongoing findings that Xenical can help people living with type 2 diabetes lose weight and improve their blood sugar levels." George Bray, MD, of the Pennington Biomedical Research Center in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, presented results at the meeting from a new study showing that Xenical and a mildly reduced-calorie diet helped patients with type 2 diabetes who take insulin to further control their diabetes by lowering blood sugar levels and losing weight, decreasing average doses of insulin, and reducing cardiovascular risks. In March 2001, Roche, the maker of Xenical, submitted a supplemental application to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for a new indication for Xenical to improve glycemic control when used as an adjunct to other antidiabetic treatments in overweight or obese patients with type 2 diabetes. This announcement followed encouraging results from two previous clinical trials presented at last year's (2000) International Diabetes Federation meeting that indicated that some patients with type 2 diabetes who took Xenical in addition to their diabetes medication not only lost weight, but were able to further control their diabetes by reducing their blood sugar and were also able to reduce the daily dose of their diabetes medications.

Promoting a positive approach to living with vitiligo
We recommend that new visitors follow through the 'About Vitiligo' section (3 pages) that starts below and which takes a question and answer format. This may answer many of your queries. Other areas of this site deal with such things as events research grants membership etc. Vitiligo is quite a common skin condition which can cause extreme distress to sufferers because of its unusual appearance. It affects at least one in every hundred people in countries throughout the world including the UK. It affects people of both sexes equally, and it affects all races. It can begin at any age, though about fifty percent of people with vitiligo develop it before the age of twenty five. You cannot catch vitiligo. It is not infectious. Alternative text navigation
