WB002 Digestive Disorders Home Test Kit Click to enlarge Why do I need to do this test? Did you know that 80% of stomach ulcers and 95% of duodenal ulcers are caused by H.pylori infections and that chronic indigestion is more likely to be due to an H.pylori infection than by rich foods or stress? The presence of H.pylori in the gut increases the risk of a heart attack and has been linked with an increased risk of stomach cancer. Early detection means that treatment can be started before more serious conditions arise. This test detects antibodies to the organism Helicobacter pylori. Symptoms may often be put down to indigestion and ignored but screening, diagnosis and treatment with antibiotics and ulcer medication can effectively cure ulcers without recurrence. You may be experiencing a loss of appetite, weight loss, heartburn, stomach pain and discomfort (often stabbing or burning) which may move to the back, nausea and vomiting, vomiting of blood, dark stools.

DIGESTIVE DISORDERS
References and Suggested Readings for Protocol
Abstracts for Protocol Printing? Use this ! Continued from DIGESTIVE DISORDERS How significant is an enzyme deficiency to overall health? For starters, organs that are overworked will enlarge in order to perform the increased workload. Those with congestive heart failure or aortic valvular disease often suffer from an enlarged heart, an unhealthy condition. When the pancreas enlarges in order to produce more digestive enzymes, there results a deficiency in the production of life-sustaining metabolic enzymes, as available enzyme-producing capacity is used in digesting food instead of supporting cellular enzymatic functions. The tremendous impact that wastage of pancreatic enzymes can have on health and even life itself has been established in animal studies. The critical question is how this applies to human health.

and result in nearly 45 million visits to healthcare providers each year. Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) alone affects 10 to 20 percent of adults. Such disorders can cause embarrassment, discomfort, and without medical attention, some can be fatal. As a leader in women's healthcare, Magee-Womens Hospital is committed to identifying why and how digestive disorders affect women and men differently. Research has uncovered some important evidence in the connection between digestive disorders and women. For example, women who use non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (such as ibuprofen) to relieve menstrual pain are increasing their risk of intestinal inflammation. It is also known that inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and any history of prolonged steroid use increase the risk of osteoporosis for menopausal women. But it is still not clear why:
  • Women get IBS two to three times more than men The incidence of Crohn's disease diagnosed in younger women
has increased over the past few decades The rate of sigmoidoscopy is significantly lower in women than men
  • The experts at the Digestive Disorders Center at Magee-Womens Hospital are equipped with the most up-to-date research and clinical information, providing women with the best plan of treatment on an individual basis.

Stomach cancer, also known as gastric cancer, is cancer that starts in any part of the stomach. The stomach is just one of many organs located in the abdomen, the area of the body between the chest and the pelvis. Among other organs found in the abdomen are the liver, pancreas, gallbladder, and colon. It is important to differentiate among these organs, because cancers and other diseases that occur in them have different symptoms and are treated differently. The American Cancer Society estimates that 21,900 people will be diagnosed with stomach cancer in 1999, and 13,500 people will die from it. What causes stomach cancer?
